Chapter 4: The Man At The Door

I had imagined many versions of the person responsible for the nightmare inside my home.
A stranger.
A criminal.
Someone dangerous.
But I never imagined him walking through my front door wearing a tailored suit and carrying a bouquet of flowers.
That was the first thing that disturbed me.
He didn’t look like a threat.
He looked like a man attending a family dinner.
“Emily?””
His voice echoed through the house.
Calm.
Confident.
Almost friendly.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Ryan, don’t let him see Sophie.””
I looked at her.
“He already knows she’s here.””
Her face fell.
“How?””
I held up my phone.
“The message.””
Emily closed her eyes.
For a second, she looked exhausted.
Like she had been running from this moment for years.
Then the man called again.
“Emily, I know you’re home.””
I walked upstairs.
Emily followed.
When we reached the hallway, I saw him standing near the entrance.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive clothes.
A smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Ryan Carter,” he said.
He extended his hand.
“I’m Richard Whitmore.””
I didn’t shake it.
“You know who I am.””
He smiled slightly.
“I’ve known who you were for a very long time.””
The way he said it made my stomach twist.
Emily stepped between us.
“Dad, leave.””
Richard looked at her.
“Still dramatic after all these years.””
“Leave.””
He sighed.
“I came here because I heard my granddaughter was in danger.””
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“Your granddaughter has been living behind a wall.””
Richard’s expression barely changed.
“Children are complicated.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“People are complicated. Children are not.””
His eyes moved toward the hallway.
Then toward Lily’s bedroom.
“Where is Sophie?””
Emily immediately became defensive.
“She’s not yours to take.””
Richard smiled.
“There she is.””
The confidence in his voice made my skin crawl.
“You still think you can control this.””
I looked at Emily.
“What does he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Richard did.
“Your wife has always been good at hiding things.””
“Enough.””
Emily’s voice cracked.
But Richard ignored her.
“Did she tell you about the accident?””
I looked at Emily.
“What accident?””
Her face changed.
“Dad.””
Richard continued.
“The night Sophie disappeared.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“She never disappeared.””
Richard smiled.
“That’s what you believe.””
I stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Ryan, don’t listen to him.””
Richard laughed softly.
“Still protecting him.””
He looked at me.
“Your wife has spent years rewriting history.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Richard studied me for a moment.
Then he said:
“The truth is that Sophie was never supposed to survive.””
The words were like ice.
Behind us, a small voice spoke.
“Mommy?””
Everyone froze.
Sophie stood at the top of the stairs.
Emily immediately moved toward her.
But Richard looked at the little girl with a strange expression.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Recognition.
“You’ve gotten so big.””
Sophie stepped backward.
She didn’t know him.
But she was afraid of him.
And that told me everything.
I moved in front of her.
“Stay away from her.””
Richard looked at me.
“You really don’t remember, do you?””
My heart started racing.
“Remember what?””
He tilted his head.
“The night you begged us not to give up on her.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard smiled.
A slow, terrible smile.
“Ask your wife why she let you forget.””
Emily started crying.
“Stop.””
But Richard wasn’t finished.
He reached into his coat pocket.
And pulled out a photograph.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
It was me.
Standing in a hospital room.
Holding baby Sophie.
But this time, there was something different.
Someone else was in the picture.
A woman standing beside me.
A woman I didn’t recognize.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
A date from before I met Emily.
My hands started shaking.
Because the woman in the picture was holding a newborn baby.
And written underneath her name was a message:
“Your first daughter. Before Sophie.””
I looked up slowly.
Richard whispered:
“Now you understand why Emily was so afraid.””
The house became silent.
Then Sophie spoke.
“Daddy…”
I turned toward her.
She was crying.
“Who is my sister?””
And in that moment, I realized the secret hidden behind my walls was not one child.
May you like
It was two.
And one of them had been missing for years.
