Chapter 6: The Girl In The Photograph

I didn’t sleep that night.
I couldn’t.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph.
Ava.
A little girl I had never held.
A daughter who existed in the world while I lived believing my family was complete.
The next morning, I found Emily sitting alone at the kitchen table.
Two untouched cups of coffee sat between us.
Neither of us drank.
For the first time in years, we felt like strangers.
“Tell me everything.””
Emily looked up.
Her eyes were tired.
“I don’t know where to start.””
“Start with the truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“The truth is that you were never supposed to forget.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“After the accident, your memories were damaged. The doctors said some things might return over time.””
I remembered the headaches.
The confusion.
The feeling that pieces of my life were missing.
“But you all told me there was nothing important.””
Emily looked down.
“Because Richard made sure of that.””
I felt anger rising.
“Why?””
“Because Ava was evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Emily hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Of what he did.””
I leaned forward.
“What did he do?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Making sure Sophie wasn’t listening.
“Richard had money. Power. Connections.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He wanted control.””
I waited.
“He believed our family belonged to him. He decided who stayed and who left. He decided what people knew.””
I stared at her.
“And Claire?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“My sister tried to take Ava away from him.””
“Why?””
“Because she discovered what he had been doing.””
A chill ran through me.
“What was he doing?””
Emily looked at the floor.
“Manipulating everything around him. Using people. Hiding things.””
“That still doesn’t explain Ava.””
Emily whispered:
“Claire found documents.””
“What documents?””
“Financial records. Illegal agreements. Things Richard couldn’t let anyone see.””
I looked toward the living room.
Where Richard had been sitting the night before.
The man who smiled while my life collapsed.
“And Ava saw something?””
Emily nodded.
“She was only a baby. But Richard was afraid Claire had told someone.””
“So he took her?””
Emily’s silence confirmed it.
My hands tightened.
“How did Sophie get involved?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because Sophie was born after Claire died.””
I waited.
“After the accident, I raised Sophie. I knew Richard would try to take her too.””
“Why hide her from me?””
Emily’s eyes filled with guilt.
“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””
That hurt.
More than I expected.
“You didn’t trust me?””
“I trusted you.””
She swallowed.
“But I didn’t trust what Richard could do to you.””
I looked away.
The pain was complicated.
Because part of me understood.
And another part of me felt destroyed.
Then we heard footsteps.
Sophie walked into the kitchen holding a drawing.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
She hesitated.
“Can I show you something?””
I nodded.
She handed me the paper.
It was a drawing of three children.
Lily.
Sophie.
And another girl.
Older.
With dark hair.
I stared at it.
“Who is this?””
Sophie looked confused.
“Your daughter.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She pointed at the drawing.
“Ava.””
I looked at Emily.
“How does she know that name?””
Emily stood quickly.
“Sophie.””
The little girl looked scared.
“I’m sorry, Mommy.””
I knelt beside her.
“No, sweetheart. You’re not in trouble.””
She looked at me.
“She came to me in my dreams.””
I felt a strange chill.
“What did she say?””
Sophie hugged the paper.
“She said she was waiting for Daddy to remember.””
I looked at Emily.
Neither of us spoke.
Then my phone rang.
This time, it wasn’t an unknown number.
It was a name.
A name I had never seen before.
Ava Carter.
My hands froze.
The phone kept ringing.
Emily covered her mouth.
Sophie whispered:
“That’s her.””
I looked at the screen.
My missing daughter.
Calling me.
After all these years.
I answered.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a small voice spoke.
“Daddy?””
I closed my eyes.
Because it was the same word Sophie had said.
But this time…
I knew exactly who was saying it.
“I’m sorry,” the girl whispered.
My heart broke.
“Why?””
Ava started crying.
“Because Mommy told me I could never talk to you.””
I looked at Emily.
She went completely still.
“Who is your mommy?”” I asked.
The girl hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The woman who has been raising me.””
A pause.
Then:
“And Ryan…”
“Yes?””
Her voice dropped.
“She’s not the only person who kept me hidden.””
The line crackled.
“What do you mean?””
Ava took a shaky breath.
“Because the man who took me…”
A long silence.

Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Is standing outside my bedroom right now.””
