Chapter 38 - The Desert Reckoning

Donald Vance-Hayes removed his sunglasses with a hand that visibly shook. The two civilian executives behind him—senior regional representatives for Aetheris Tactical—instinctively stepped back, looking toward their vehicle.
"Major Miller," Sophia called out, never shifting her eyes from Vance-Hayes.
"Ma'am!"
"Take these two civilian contractors and General Vance-Hayes into Pod 4," Sophia ordered. "The living container where the compressor failed this morning."
The lead civilian executive, a man named Brian Thornton, flushed with indignation. "General Carter, you cannot detain civilian contractors! We are private corporate employees protected by federal defense procurement protocols!"
"You delivered fraudulent, unsafe life-support shelters to active-duty service members under an operational defense contract, Mr. Thornton," Sophia replied with ruthless precision. "Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, civilians serving with or accompanying an armed force in the field during declared contingency operations are subject to military judicial authority under Article 2. Major Miller, escort them inside."
"Yes, General."
Miller drew his sidearm to the low-ready position and directed Vance-Hayes and the two executives into the sweltering, windowless steel container. Within ninety seconds, the internal temperature of the metal box—trapping the blistering midday sun—turned their tailored shirts into soaking rags. Their breathing became ragged; sweat poured down their faces in blinding streams.
Sophia stood just outside the open door, watching them endure a mere fraction of what eighteen-year-old privates had endured for four weeks.
"Uncomfortable, gentlemen?" Sophia asked quietly.
Vance-Hayes leaned against the scorching steel wall, his knees trembling. "Sophia... please... this is inhumane. We can't breathe in here—"
"Inhumane?" Sophia countered, her tone sharp as broken glass. "Your soldiers lived in this for twenty-eight days while you signed off on thirty million dollars in contractor performance bonuses. You certified this compound as fully operational so your family’s investment group could collect dividends on a sham defense company."
Thornton collapsed onto a rusted bunk frame, gasping for air. "I'll talk! I have the emails! Vance-Hayes knew the units were refurbished Permian Basin scrap! He took a twenty-percent equity share in Aetheris through an offshore trust before the contract went to the procurement board!"
"Shut your mouth, Thornton!" Vance-Hayes gasped, lunging forward, but Major Miller planted a heavy combat boot in front of him, blocking him with an immovable chest.
"Let him speak, General," Sophia said coldly. "Because every word he utters is being recorded by the body cameras of the Military Police detachment currently surrounding your headquarters in El Paso."
The thunder of rotor blades shook the sky as two UH-60 Black Hawk medical evacuation helicopters descended onto the desert clearing, kicking up a cyclone of amber dust. Flight medics poured out of the cabins, running toward the heat-stricken paratroopers with stretchers, IV bags, and cooling blankets.

Sophia stepped back from the sweltering container.
"Drake, secure these three in the tactical holding cells at Fort Bliss," Sophia commanded. "And bring every maintenance logbook from this site to my command desk. We’re tearing down Aetheris brick by brick."
