Chapter 37 - The Ghost Outpost

Sector Charlie sat forty miles southwest of Deming, New Mexico, where the desert stretched in shimmering waves of heat toward the jagged spine of the Florida Mountains. The air at 1300 hours felt like stepping directly into an open furnace, baking the scrub brush and caliche dirt until the landscape rippled with mirages.
An unmarked military four-wheel-drive convoy crested the low gravel ridge overlooking Forward Operating Post Desolation.
Sophia stepped out of the lead vehicle. The heat hit her like a physical blow through her operational camouflage uniform, the three silver stars on her collar glinting sharply under the blinding desert sky. Major Drake and Major Miller stepped out beside her, squinting against the harsh glare.
The outpost looked like a junkyard of rusted metal shipping containers baking under the sun. Portable diesel generators sputtered erratically, spewing black, acrid exhaust that hung in the stagnant air.
Inside the perimeter, two soldiers were sitting beneath an improvised shade tarp tied between two antenna masts. One of them, a specialist with paratrooper jump wings faded from sweat, was holding a plastic bag of melted ice against the neck of a private first class who was pale, shivering, and vomiting into an empty ration box.
Sophia marched straight into the compound.
The specialist saw the three silver stars and scrambled to his feet, knocking his canteen over in absolute panic. "Ten-hut! Attention on deck!"
"At ease, Specialist," Sophia said, her voice cutting through the generator noise. She crouched immediately beside the kneeling private. The soldier’s skin was dry, burning to the touch, his pulse rapid and thready.
"Where is your unit medic?" Sophia demanded.
"Captain Alvarez is over in Pod 3, Ma'am," the specialist answered, his voice cracking from dry throat and exhaustion. "We’ve got seven guys down with severe heat illness today. The AC unit on our bunk pod died three days ago. The internal temp hit one hundred and twenty degrees at noon."
Sophia looked at Major Drake. "Drake, get our vehicle’s medical trauma kit and call in an immediate medevac chopper from Fort Bliss. Move."
"On it, General," Drake shouted, sprinting back toward the convoy.
Sophia walked toward the center pod, where a heavy-duty padlock secured a side maintenance trailer. Major Miller used an iron prybar from the vehicle kit to snap the latch.
Inside sat twelve brand-new, commercial-grade portable air conditioning units and fifty cases of clean bottled water—stacked neatly under a handwritten sign that read: FOR COMMAND INSPECTION TEAM USE ONLY.
Sophia stood in the doorway, staring at the hoarded cold-air units while enlisted soldiers lay suffering in the dust outside.
Behind her, the sound of an approaching staff Humvee announced the arrival of the base leadership. Brigadier General Donald Vance-Hayes stepped out of the air-conditioned cabin, wiping his brow with a clean linen handkerchief, accompanied by two civilian executives in designer sunglasses and high-end desert khakis.
"General Carter," Vance-Hayes said, attempting to sound warmly surprised while a sheen of nervous sweat broke across his forehead. "We weren't informed the Corps Commander was visiting a joint border detachment. If you had given us notice, we would have prepared the VIP quarters in El Paso—"
Sophia turned around slowly. The cold, unyielding fury in her gray eyes made Vance-Hayes stop ten paces away, his mouth shutting with a faint click of his teeth.
"You have seven soldiers suffering from Stage II heat illness outside," Sophia said, her voice dropping into a register that felt far more terrifying than the desert heat. "While you locked functional cooling systems and clean water inside a private trailer for your comfort."
"General, those are reserve units designated for technical certification under the Aetheris contractor agreement—" Vance-Hayes stammered.
"Shut up," Sophia said.
May you like
She walked directly up to Vance-Hayes until her face was inches from his.
"Take off your sunglasses, General, and look at the soldiers you were sent here to protect."
