Chapter 32 - The Mannheim Redoubt

The gray, chilly fog of the Rhine valley hung low over Coleman Barracks in Mannheim, Germany. Rows of cavernous corrugated-steel warehouses held thousands of pre-positioned tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and logistical containers ready to support rapid deployment across Europe.
A black Mercedes staff sedan escorted by German Feldjäger (military police) pulled up to the security checkpoint of Warehouse Complex Delta.
Colonel Douglas Vance stood on the concrete loading apron, flanked by two private civilian contractors in heavy winter coats and an administrative warrant officer carrying an electronic manifest clipboard. Douglas possessed the same sharp, patrician jawline and practiced air of entitled command as his older brothers, his service dress coat tailored to perfection against the European winter.
When the sedan’s rear door opened and Lieutenant General Sophia Carter stepped onto the gravel, Douglas did not salute immediately. He offered a strained, formal nod, his eyes hard and unyielding.
"General Carter," Douglas said, his voice dripping with defensive politeness. "A surprise visit to USAREUR’s pre-positioned stock site. I was under the impression your operational authority remained tethered to Fort Liberty."
Sophia walked past him without stopping, forcing Douglas and his entourage to scramble to keep pace. Miller and Drake followed closely behind.
"My authority, Colonel Vance, follows every piece of equipment and every soldier assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps," Sophia stated cleanly. "Unlock Warehouse 7."
Douglas stiffened, stepping in front of the massive rolling bay doors. "Warehouse 7 contains classified prepositioned medical and communications reserves managed under bilateral NATO security agreements. Access requires theater command pre-clearance. As the senior logistics authority on site, I cannot permit an unannounced entry without written authorization from the theater commander."
Sophia stopped two inches from his chest. The silence between them was sharp enough to cut through the hum of distant generators.
"Major Drake," Sophia said quietly, never breaking eye contact with Douglas.
Drake stepped forward with a tablet displaying an order bearing the digital signature of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
"Special directive authorized under Title 10, United States Code, Section 164," Drake read aloud. "Granting the Commanding General, XVIII Airborne Corps, plenary inspection authority across all theater prepositioned stock sites effective zero-eight hundred hours today."
Douglas’s throat bobbed. The private contractors behind him exchanged uneasy glances, subtly stepping backward toward their unmarked civilian van.
"Stand aside, Colonel," Sophia ordered.
Douglas hesitated, his jaw clenching with suppressed fury, before stepping to the side. "Open the bay," he spat to the warrant officer.
The heavy steel doors groaned as they rolled upward, exposing a cavernous interior illuminated by flickering sodium lights.
Inside, instead of rows of sealed, climate-controlled medical shipping containers, over half the warehouse was completely empty. Wooden pallets lay scattered across the concrete floor like discarded bones. Where twenty-two life-saving field surgical suites should have been pre-positioned to treat wounded paratroopers, there was only dust, tire tracks, and empty oil drums.
Sophia walked into the center of the vacant expanse, her boots echoing against the concrete.
"Where is the hospital equipment, Colonel Vance?" Sophia asked, her voice dropping into a register that made the civilian contractors freeze in their tracks.
"It was... deployed on temporary training loan to partner forces in Poland," Douglas stammered, his composure beginning to unravel.

"Don't lie to me," Sophia said, turning to face him. "Because the Polish Ministry of National Defence confirmed two hours ago that they have never seen a single crate. But the commercial port authority in Antwerp logged every serial number as it was loaded onto a private cargo vessel registered to Palmetto Vanguard’s overseas subsidiary."
She looked at Major Miller. "Major, signal the Feldjäger and U.S. Army CID. Detain everyone on this manifest. Secure this facility."
