Chapter 5 - THE THIRD PLAYER

The police arrived within minutes.

They took the man away—handcuffed, silent now, leaving only those terrifying words hanging in the air: Your own lawyer.

Adrian stood in the middle of the study, staring at the door long after the police car had pulled away. Olivia and Emma were safe with a neighbor, having been taken there by Adrian on his way back. But neither of us felt safe. Not really.

I lowered the gun I still held. My hands were shaking. Adrian came over gently and took it from me, setting it safely on the desk.

“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice rough with concern.

I touched my cheek where I’d been struck. It was already swelling.

“I’m fine. He didn’t hurt me. Not really.”

Adrian’s gaze darkened when he saw the mark on my face. He reached out, his fingers hovering just above my skin as if afraid to touch me.

“He hit you.”

“It’s just a bruise.”

“He had no right to touch you.” Adrian pulled back, his expression hardening into something terrifying. “None of them had any right to come into this house and threaten you. Threaten my children. I’m going to tear this whole thing apart. Brick by brick.”

“He said your lawyer is involved,” I said quietly. “Do you believe him?”

Adrian walked to the window. He stood there for a long moment, staring out at the garden.

“Elias has been my lawyer for ten years. He handled my marriage. My business. My will. He’s the one who introduced me to Vanessa through Marcus.” He turned back to me, his face pale. “Every single thing traces back to them. Every single person I trusted.”

He walked to the desk and pulled up the hidden backup folder I had found earlier.

“You found this,” he said. “Good. I keep duplicates because I never fully trusted Elias. Not completely. Something always felt off.”

“What do you mean?”

Adrian sat down and began pulling up documents—bank records, transfer forms, legal filings.

“Look at this. Six months before I met Vanessa, Marcus opened an account in my name. Without my knowledge. Small transfers at first. Then larger ones. And every time… Elias signed off on the paperwork.”

My stomach turned. “They were stealing from you. Even before Vanessa came into your life.”

“Before she ever met me,” Adrian corrected. “Which means she was never my wife. She was a plant. Sent to get close to me. To keep an eye on the money. To eventually take control.”

“And if anything happened to you…” I whispered.

“Full custody. Full control. Everything.” Adrian leaned forward, his elbows on the desk, head in his hands. “They planned this for years. Clara. Years. And I walked right into it.”

I walked around the desk and placed my hand gently on his shoulder. He covered my hand with his own, gripping it tightly.

“You aren’t to blame,” I said. “They are professionals. They know exactly how to manipulate people.”

“I let them into my children’s lives,” he said brokenly. “I let her hold Emma. I let her be a mother to Olivia. She almost killed them both.”

“But she didn’t,” I said firmly. “Because you had people watching. Because Olivia recorded her. Because the truth came out.”

Adrian looked up. His eyes were red-rimmed.

“Because of you. You were the one who stood between them and everything they wanted. You protected my children when I couldn’t see what was happening.” He stood up and faced me fully. “I don’t know how to thank you. I don’t think I ever can.”

“Just make sure they never get close to the girls again,” I said. “That’s all the thanks I need.”

Adrian nodded. He picked up his phone and dialed a number.

“Detective? It’s Adrian. Don’t just arrest Marcus. Look into Elias Vance. My lawyer. Pull every transaction, every document, every meeting he ever had with Vanessa or Marcus. And get a restraining order against all three of them. Permanently.”

He hung up. Then he began gathering files—copies of everything.

“I’m taking all of this to a different firm. Tonight. Someone completely outside the circle. Someone they’ve never heard of.” He looked at me. “Clara… I need you to stay with the girls at the neighbor’s tonight. Don’t come back here. Not until I know this house is safe.”

“And you?”

“I’m going to the police station. I’m going to make sure every single one of them knows exactly what they’re facing. And then I’m going to find out how deep this goes.” He hesitated. “I need to know I can trust you with them. That you’ll keep them safe.”

“I promised I would,” I said. “And I keep my promises.”

Adrian reached out and brushed his thumb gently against my uninjured cheek.

“I know you do. That’s why I trust you with everything I have.” He took a breath. “Be careful, Clara. Please. They know who you are. They know you’re the one who exposed them. You’re in as much danger as the girls.”

“I know.”

“Promise me you’ll call if anything feels wrong. Anything at all.”

“I promise.”

He leaned in—hesitated for one heartbeat—then pressed his forehead gently against mine.

“Thank you,” he whispered. “For everything.”

Then he pulled back, grabbed the files, and walked out the door.

I stood there alone in the quiet study. The room felt different now. The place where I had nearly died. Where a stranger had held a gun to my head. Where I had learned that the people Adrian trusted most were the ones trying to destroy him.

I looked down at the desk. The stranger had dropped something when Adrian tackled him. A small, silver keychain. With three initials engraved on the back.

*E.V. + M.V. + V.V.*

Elias. Marcus. Vanessa.

Three initials. Three conspirators. A family.

I picked it up carefully, holding it between my fingers.

They were related. Not just business partners. Brothers and sister.

Adrian hadn’t just married a woman who wanted his money. He had married into a family of thieves. And they had been planning this for longer than any of us realized.

I pulled out my phone and took a photo of the engraving. Then I texted it to Adrian.

His reply came less than a minute later.

*I know. I just found the birth certificates. Same mother. Same father. Elias, Marcus, and Vanessa. Siblings. They’ve been playing me from the very beginning.*

I stared at the words.

Three siblings. Working together. Infiltrating Adrian’s life. Stealing his money. Trying to take his children. And they had almost succeeded.

My phone buzzed again. Another text from Adrian.

*Stay where you are. Don’t go to the neighbor’s yet. Someone just wiped all the security footage from the street cameras. They’re covering their tracks. And they know we know.*

Before I could reply, the lights in the house went out.

Complete darkness.

And from the hallway, I heard the front door open.

May you like

Slowly. Quietly.

Someone else was in the house.
