Chapter 16 - THE HIDDEN FILE

We drove home in a daze.
Adrian didn’t speak. He gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. His face was pale, set in hard, shocked lines.
When we walked into the house, Olivia ran to us. But Adrian gently told her to go to her room. He carried Emma upstairs himself. Then he came back down and stood in the hallway, staring at the floor.
“Is it true?” he asked quietly. “Or was it one last lie to hurt me?”
“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “But we have to find out. We have to look.”
We went to the place Vanessa had described—a hidden safe built into the floor of the master bedroom closet, covered by a heavy cabinet. It took us two hours to find the combination. When we finally opened it, we found one single envelope.
Inside were documents. Birth certificates. Medical records. Passports. And a letter, dated the day Emma was born.
Adrian read it first. His hands trembled so badly he could barely hold the paper.
“Her name is Lena,” he whispered. “Lena Moretti. She’s alive. Vanessa paid her five hundred thousand dollars to leave the country. To never contact us. To let everyone believe she was dead.”
He sank onto the floor, the letter slipping from his fingers.
“I buried an empty coffin,” he said brokenly. “I grieved a woman who was alive. And I let Vanessa raise my daughter… because she stole her mother from her.”
I knelt beside him and held him while he cried. The pain of it—the betrayal, the loss, the years of stolen life—was almost too much to bear.

When he finally calmed, he looked up at me, his eyes red and raw.
“She’s alive, Clara. Emma’s mother is alive. And she’s been living all these years believing her baby was dead.”
