Chapter 19 - THE TRUTH AND THE TEARS

Lena sat in her living room, trembling, while Adrian told her everything.
From the beginning. The marriage. The lie about her death. The money. The threat. The years of separation. The way Vanessa had stolen her identity and her child.
Lena listened in silence. She didn’t cry. She didn’t speak. She just sat there, staring at Adrian, as if trying to understand how one person could lose so much in such a short time.
When he finished, she looked at me.
“And you?” she asked quietly.
“I’m the nanny,” I said gently. “I’ve been caring for Emma since she was a baby. I love her. And I love Adrian.”
Lena nodded slowly. Then she looked back at Adrian.
“Is she happy?” she asked, her voice barely audible. “Is my baby happy?”
Adrian’s face crumpled.
“She’s perfect. She’s beautiful. She laughs all the time. She loves chasing butterflies. She sings before she falls asleep. And she… she calls me Daddy.”
Lena broke then. She wept—quiet, heartbroken sobs that shook her whole body. Adrian moved to comfort her, then hesitated, unsure. I stepped forward and put my arms around her. She leaned into me, crying as if her heart would break.
When she finally calmed, she looked up at me.
“Vanessa told me you were dangerous,” she whispered. “She sent me articles. Stories. She said you were trying to take my place.”
I handed her the letter Vanessa had written me from prison. Lena read it slowly.
“She admitted everything,” Lena said, her voice hollow. “She admitted she was wrong.”
“She realized too late,” I said.

Lena stood up and walked to the window. She stood there for a very long time.
“Bring her to me,” she said quietly. “Please. Bring my daughter home.”
