Chapter 5

Tyler’s parents arrived angry.

His father came in first, expensive watch flashing, voice already raised.

“My son says he was assaulted.”

His mother followed, holding her phone like she had already prepared a lawsuit.

Mr. Harris invited them into the conference room.

My mom and I sat on one side.

Tyler sat on the other with his parents.

He would not look at me.

His father did.

Like I was something dirty on his son’s shoe.

Mr. Harris played the video.

Nobody spoke.

When Tyler flipped my lunchbox, his mother looked down.

When Tyler threatened me, his father’s jaw tightened.

When Emma’s second clip showed Tyler writing on the back of my mom’s note, his mother whispered, “Tyler.”

His father said, “Boys make mistakes.”

My mom lifted her head.

“That was not a mistake.”

He looked at her uniform.

Then at her tired face.

I saw the judgment before he spoke.

“With respect, your son pushed mine.”

My mom’s voice stayed calm.

“With respect, your son planned to humiliate mine.”

The room went quiet.

Mr. Harris said, “Tyler will receive consequences according to the school discipline policy. We will also be investigating prior incidents and staff response.”

Tyler’s father leaned back.

“You’re ruining a kid’s record over lunchroom drama?”

I felt smaller.

Then my mom said, “My son’s dignity is not lunchroom drama.”

That sentence stayed with me for the rest of my life.
