Chapter 4

Emma’s recording changed everything.

She had filmed under the table, so the video was shaky.

But the audio was clear.

Tyler’s voice.

“What’s that smell?”

His friends laughing.

The lunchbox flipping.

My mom’s note landing in the food.

Tyler saying, “Clean it up.”

Then my bench scraping.

My shove.

His threat.

“You’re dead.”

Mr. Harris watched the whole thing with the assistant principal, the counselor, and my mom.

Yes.

My mom.

They called her at work.

She arrived still wearing her grocery store uniform, hair pulled back, face pale with worry.

When she saw the sauce stains on my shoes, she covered her mouth.

“Eli.”

I tried to say I was okay.

But her eyes moved to the lunchbox.

The ruined note.

The food on my shirt.

And I saw her understand.

Not just today.

Everything.

She sat beside me and pulled me close.

I whispered, “I’m sorry.”

She pulled back.

“For what?”

“I dropped the food.”

Her face crumpled.

“Oh, baby.”

She hugged me harder.

“You did not waste anything. Someone stole your peace. That is not the same.”

I cried into her uniform.

May you like

It smelled like laundry soap and store coffee.

Home.
