Chapter 2

The cafeteria went silent in a way I had never heard before.

Not normal quiet.

Not teacher quiet.

The kind of quiet that happens when everyone realizes they saw something cruel and waited too long to name it.

The principal, Mr. Harris, bent down and picked up my mother’s note.

The front side was soft and ruined.

Eat well, buddy. I love you.

The back side looked like a threat.

Poor kid eats trash.

Make him cry today.

Mr. Harris looked at Tyler.

“Did you write this?”

Tyler’s face twisted.

“No.”

Emma said, “Yes, he did.”

Tyler pointed at her.

“She’s lying.”

Emma’s hand shook, but her voice did not.

“I recorded him writing it in homeroom.”

Tyler went pale.

His friends looked at the floor.

Mr. Harris turned to them.

“Did you know about this?”

No one answered.

That was answer enough.

The teacher, Mrs. Grant, came to my side.

“Eli, are you hurt?”

My name sounded strange coming from an adult who had watched from across the room for weeks and only now came close.

I looked at my shoes.

Rice and sauce covered them.

My socks felt wet.

“My lunch,” I whispered.

Her face changed.

Like she had expected me to mention my shoulder.

My shove.

Tyler.

But all I could think about was my mom waking up early before work to pack food we could barely afford.

My mom’s tired hands folding that note.

Tyler stepping on it.

Mr. Harris said, “Tyler, office. Now.”

Tyler snapped, “He shoved me!”

Mr. Harris looked at him.

“And we will discuss that too.”

Tyler smiled a little.

Until Mr. Harris added, “After we review the recording, the note, and every student statement about the past month.”

The smile disappeared again.
