Chapter 6 - ISABELLA'S LIE

Lorenzo moved between Evelyn and the gun.
"Lower it."
Isabella's hands did not shake.
"Move."
"Mother."
"I said move."
Evelyn stayed very still.
The woman in front of her looked nothing like a hostage.
Isabella Moretti was in her late fifties, elegant without softness, with the same dark eyes as her son.
A bruise marked one wrist.
That was the only sign anything had happened to her.
Rafe appeared at the closet door with his weapon lowered but ready.
"Mrs. Moretti."
Her eyes flicked to him.
"Rafe, if you point that at me, I will tell your mother."
Rafe actually hesitated.
"She would probably agree with you."
Lorenzo stepped closer.
"Where is Celeste?"
"Gone."
"Who took you?"
"Luca."
Rafe swore.
Lorenzo did not move.
"Luca is alive?"
"He was thirty minutes ago."
"Where?"
"Carriage house."
"Why are you pointing a gun at Evelyn?"
Isabella looked past him.
"Because Daniel Carter once nearly destroyed this family."
Evelyn's anger overcame caution.
"Then explain why he hid a ledger in your house."
Isabella's gaze sharpened.
"You found it."
"A blank one."
Isabella lowered the pistol by an inch.
That was enough.
Lorenzo took it from her.
She let him.
"It is not blank," Isabella said.
Evelyn looked at the pages.
"Then what is it?"
"A chemical process."
"Heat reveals the writing."
Rafe glanced toward the gas-filled panic room.
"Convenient."
"Daniel was paranoid."
"Daniel was hunted," Evelyn snapped.
Isabella looked at her for a long time.
"Both can be true."
Lorenzo's voice was quiet.
"You knew he was alive."
Isabella looked at her son.
There was a delay.
Half a heartbeat.
Evelyn saw it.
"She knows," Evelyn said.
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
"Mother."
Isabella walked into the library.
She poured herself water from a dusty crystal decanter as if the house had not just tried to poison them.
"I knew he survived the night he disappeared."
Evelyn followed.
"Where is he?"
"I do not know."
"Another convenient answer."
"He contacted me twice."
"When?"
"Once in 2014."
"Once in 2020."
Evelyn felt something inside her tear open.
"He was alive six years ago."
Isabella's face softened slightly.
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
"He made me swear not to."
"I was his daughter."
"That was why."
Evelyn stepped toward her.
"Do not tell me that was protection."
"It was survival."
"For who?"
"For you."
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"Everyone keeps ruining my life in the name of saving it."
Lorenzo looked at his mother.
"Why did Luca take you?"
Isabella's expression hardened again.
"He came to my apartment with four men."
"Said there was an attack."
"I believed him until the route changed."
"Then what?"
"I made him believe I was frightened."
Rafe gave a small nod.
Evelyn recognized respect.
"He brought me here."
"Celeste was waiting."
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
"What did she want?"
"The ledger."
"She thought I knew how to open the floor."
"Did you?"
"No."
Isabella looked at Evelyn.
"Daniel never trusted me enough for that."
"Maybe he had reasons," Evelyn said.
"He did."
The answer surprised her.
Isabella sat.
"Your father believed my husband was compromised by Salvatore."
"Was he?"
"Eventually."
Lorenzo's expression became distant.
"You never told me this."
"You were a child."
"I am not a child now."
"No."
Isabella looked at him.
"Now you are a man who nearly married the daughter of the people who arranged your father's downfall."
Silence filled the library.
Evelyn turned toward Lorenzo.
"Your father was betrayed by the Vanes?"
Isabella answered.
"Not only the Vanes."
"Our own people helped."
"Salvatore promised peace with the Vane organization."
"He called it modernization."
"Your father called it surrender."
Lorenzo's mouth tightened.
"He died of a heart attack."
Isabella's eyes did not leave him.
"That is what the doctor wrote."
Evelyn felt the room grow colder.
"The third ledger proves otherwise?"
"Maybe."
Isabella pointed at the blank book.
"Daniel said it contained the bridge between two decades of crimes."
"Old money."
"New money."
"Judges."
"Police."
"Construction unions."
"And the names of the people who arranged three deaths that made the alliance possible."
Lorenzo spoke first.
"Whose deaths?"
Isabella looked at him.
"Your father."
Then at Evelyn.
"Your mother."
Evelyn felt all sound disappear.
"My mother died of pneumonia."
"That is what you were told."
"I watched her get sick."
"So did Daniel."
Isabella's voice was gentle now.
"He believed the illness was induced."
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
"He had no proof then."
"Only after she died did he find payments to a private clinic and a physician connected to the Vanes."
Evelyn's knees weakened.
Lorenzo pulled a chair toward her.
She did not sit.
"Why would anyone kill my mother?"
"Because Daniel was thinking about leaving Chicago."
"She was the leverage that kept him here."
"After she died, they expected grief to make him obedient."
Isabella looked at the ledger.
"Instead, it made him dangerous."
Evelyn remembered her mother coughing in their tiny kitchen.
She remembered orange medicine bottles.
She remembered her father arguing with doctors.
She remembered one physician arriving at their apartment in a black car.
For years, she had interpreted those memories as poverty and panic.
Now they felt staged.
"Who was the third death?" Lorenzo asked.
Isabella closed her eyes.
"Your older brother."
Lorenzo's face emptied.
Evelyn knew from newspapers that Lorenzo had been an only child.
"I did not have a brother."
"You had a half brother."
Lorenzo did not blink.
"Name."
"Matteo."
Rafe looked away.
He knew.
Lorenzo saw it.
"You knew?"
Rafe's silence condemned him.
"How long?"
"Three years."
Lorenzo crossed the room so fast Evelyn barely saw him move.
He slammed Rafe against the wall.
"Three years."
Rafe did not fight back.
"Your mother made me swear."
"Everyone in this city swears things on my behalf."
"Lorenzo," Isabella said.
He released Rafe.
His hands shook once.
Then stopped.
"What happened to Matteo?"
Isabella's voice broke for the first time.
"He was twenty-one."
"He challenged Salvatore in front of the captains."
"Two weeks later, his car went into the lake."
"They called it drunk driving."
"He did not drink."
Lorenzo looked at the floor.
Evelyn understood something then.
Power did not protect people from being lied to.
Sometimes it only made the lies more expensive.
A loud bang came from the rear of the house.
Rafe drew his weapon.
"Carriage house."
They moved quickly.
Outside, the cold air cleared Evelyn's head.
The carriage house door stood open.
Inside, a man was tied to a support beam.
Luca.
He had blood on his shirt and tape across his mouth.
Rafe cut him free.
Luca collapsed to his knees.
Lorenzo tore the tape away.
"Why did you take my mother?"
Luca coughed.
"I did not."
Isabella stepped forward.
"You were in the car."
"Because they had my wife."
"They used my credentials."
"They put a gun on me before I reached your apartment."
Rafe checked his injuries.
"Who?"
Luca looked at Lorenzo.
"Dante."
Nobody spoke.
Dante Bellini was one of Lorenzo's most trusted captains.
He had been at Table Four.
He had disappeared after the blast.
Luca continued.
"Dante gave the security routes to Celeste."
"He knew the north hall would be sealed."
"He knew your backup car."
"He knew every safehouse."
Lorenzo's voice was quiet.
"Where is he?"
"Gone."
Luca swallowed.
"But he left something."
From inside his torn jacket, he pulled a small memory card.
"I took it from Celeste's laptop before they caught me."
Rafe looked at it.
"What is on it?"
"Video."
"Files."
"A schedule."
Luca looked at Evelyn.
"And a folder with her name on it."
They returned to the library.
Rafe used an offline laptop to open the card.
Folders filled the screen.
OBSIDIAN.
MORETTI.
HAWTHORNE.
CARTER.
Evelyn's skin prickled.
Rafe opened CARTER.
Inside were photographs of Evelyn leaving work.
Entering her apartment.
Buying groceries.
Sitting alone at a diner.
Visiting her mother's grave.
Months of surveillance.
Then they found a video dated two weeks earlier.
The image showed Celeste in a private office.
Dante stood beside her.
A third person remained off camera.
Celeste spoke first.
"The waitress does not know anything."
Dante answered.
"Her father built the locks around her."
"She does not need to know."
"She only needs to be present."
The unseen person asked a question.
The voice had been electronically distorted.
Celeste nodded.
"Yes."
"Lorenzo will protect her once she warns him."
"He is predictable that way."
Evelyn looked at Lorenzo.
He stared at the screen.
Celeste continued.
"Then she will lead him to Hawthorne."
"The ledger will do the rest."
Dante asked.
"And if she refuses to warn him?"
Celeste smiled.
"Then he dies at the Obsidian and we use the girl later."
The recording ended.
Rafe whispered.
"They expected the napkin."
Evelyn felt sick.
Her brave choice had been part of someone else's design.
Lorenzo read her face.
"No."
"You heard her."
"She predicted you might act."
"That is not the same as controlling you."
"It got us here."
"Because Daniel wanted us here too."
Evelyn looked at the blank ledger.
Two plans had been running toward the same room for fourteen years.
One belonged to her father.
One belonged to Celeste.
And she could no longer tell which plan had just won.
Rafe clicked another file.
A spreadsheet opened.
At the top was a date.
OCTOBER 17, 2026.
The same date impressed into Daniel's notebook.
Beneath it was a title.
TRANSFER OF CHICAGO ASSETS.
Lorenzo leaned closer.
A list of names appeared.
Judges.
Union leaders.
Police commanders.
Businesses.
At the bottom was one line highlighted in red.
SUBJECT: LORENZO MORETTI.
STATUS REQUIRED BEFORE TRANSFER: DECEASED.
Evelyn stared at the date.
"Next month."
Lorenzo's eyes moved down the screen.
"No."
He pointed at a smaller line beneath it.
EARLY EXECUTION AUTHORIZED IF CARTER KEY ACTIVATES.
Rafe looked at Evelyn.
"You opened the floor."
The house lights went out.
May you like
A second later, the alarm began to scream.
