Chapter 11 - ISABELLA'S CONFESSION

Lorenzo did not move.

His mother sat at the kitchen table with both hands folded in front of her.

Marian's call had disconnected immediately after naming her.

No one could reconnect.

Rafe checked the number.

It no longer existed.

Evelyn watched Isabella carefully.

"Say something."

Isabella looked at her.

"What would you like?"

"A denial would be traditional."

"It would also be dishonest."

Lorenzo's voice was quieter than Evelyn had ever heard it.

"You told Celeste her mother was dead."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Isabella closed her eyes.

"Because Marian asked me to."

Daniel stood.

"No."

"She asked me to tell Victor."

Isabella looked at him.

"She never asked me to tell Celeste."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Then why did you?"

"Because Celeste kept searching."

"She was a child."

"And every time she searched, Victor hurt someone."

Isabella's composure cracked.

"A tutor disappeared."

"A driver was beaten."

"A maid's son was arrested on planted charges."

"Victor used everyone around Celeste to teach her that questions had a price."

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"So you taught her the same lesson."

Isabella flinched.

"Yes."

Lorenzo turned away.

"Did you control Janus?"

"No."

"Did you ever?"

"Never."

"Then why would Marian name you?"

"Because she thinks I betrayed her."

Daniel's expression said he might agree.

Isabella continued.

"In 2014, Marian contacted me."

"She wanted to return for Celeste."

"I told her not to."

"Victor had cancer."

"Salvatore was losing influence."

"I believed waiting would be safer."

"Two weeks later, the safehouse Marian used was attacked."

Daniel went pale.

"You gave them the location."

"No."

"Only three people knew it."

"You."

"Me."

"And Father Tomas."

Isabella looked at him.

"Then someone learned it from you."

Daniel struck the table with his fist.

"I was under guard in Milwaukee."

"Every call monitored."

"Every letter opened."

"You were the only free person in the chain."

Lorenzo stepped between them.

"Enough."

The room obeyed him.

Even Daniel.

Lorenzo looked at his mother.

"Who knew you were communicating with Marian?"

Isabella thought.

"One person."

Rafe asked.

"Who?"

"Matteo's lawyer."

Lorenzo's face tightened at his brother's name.

"Name."

"Alexander Shaw."

Rafe looked at Daniel.

"Federal prosecutor?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"He became U.S. Attorney eight years later."

Evelyn had seen Shaw on television.

Clean silver hair.

Measured voice.

A reputation for organized crime prosecutions.

"A prosecutor was your secret lawyer?"

Isabella gave her a tired look.

"Matteo wanted out."

"Shaw was helping him build a case."

Daniel whispered.

"Janus had a federal replacement too."

Nobody spoke.

The idea was larger than one family now.

Lorenzo looked at Rafe.

"Find everything on Shaw."

"Quietly."

"No connected systems."

Rafe nodded.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"If Shaw had Marian's location in 2014, he could have leaked it."

"Yes."

"And if he is Janus, he could be the person above Celeste."

"Maybe."

"Stop saying maybe."

Daniel almost smiled.

"You got that from your mother."

Evelyn's anger flashed.

"You do not get to use her to make me like you."

The smile vanished.

"Fair."

Lorenzo watched the exchange.

Then he turned to Isabella.

"You knew Celeste was being shaped by Victor."

"Yes."

"And you still encouraged our engagement."

Isabella looked at him.

"I encouraged an alliance because I believed I could keep you both alive long enough to end the war."

"You used me."

"I protected you."

"Those are not the same thing."

The sentence echoed Evelyn's own anger from earlier.

She looked at him.

He did not look back.

Isabella stood.

"You think I do not know that now?"

"I buried one son."

Lorenzo's expression broke for a fraction of a second.

"Do not use Matteo to justify lying to me."

"I am not."

"I am telling you why I became the kind of woman who thought control was the same as love."

Silence followed.

Evelyn felt something in the room shift.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

A phone buzzed on the table.

Rafe picked it up.

"Shaw is giving a press conference in thirty minutes."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"About what?"

Rafe turned the screen.

A news alert filled it.

U.S. ATTORNEY ALEXANDER SHAW ANNOUNCES FEDERAL TASK FORCE AFTER OBSIDIAN MASSACRE.

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"That is convenient."

Rafe scrolled.

"He is naming Lorenzo as the primary organized crime target."

"And Celeste?"

"Protected witness."

Lorenzo's eyes hardened.

"There it is."

Daniel leaned over the screen.

"Janus did not just prepare the murder."

"It prepared the prosecution afterward."

Isabella whispered.

"Shaw."

The press conference began on television.

Alexander Shaw stood behind a federal seal.

He spoke about public safety, accountability, and the dangerous reach of criminal organizations.

He called the Obsidian attack an escalation.

He said federal authorities had reason to believe Lorenzo Moretti orchestrated violence against rival associates.

Then he said Evelyn's video was under investigation for possible coercion.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"He is saying you forced me to record it."

Lorenzo's face remained still.

"Predictable."

Shaw continued.

"We are particularly concerned for Ms. Carter, who may be under extraordinary pressure."

Evelyn stepped closer to the television.

"He has never met me."

Daniel said quietly.

"He met you once."

She turned.

"What?"

"At your mother's funeral."

"You were twelve."

"He stood at the back."

Evelyn searched her memory.

Black coats.

Rain.

Too many adults whispering.

One man had given her an umbrella and told her she was brave.

She remembered silver at his temples even then.

"He knew me."

"Yes."

On television, Shaw took a question.

A reporter asked whether Daniel Carter's name had resurfaced in the investigation.

Shaw paused.

Too long.

"Mr. Carter died many years ago."

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He was alive three feet away.

Shaw continued.

"Any claim otherwise should be treated as deliberate misinformation."

Rafe froze the image.

"He was ready for that question."

Lorenzo nodded.

"Which means somebody told reporters to ask it."

Evelyn felt a terrible certainty settle over her.

"He knows Daniel escaped Cermack."

Daniel's face went pale.

"Then we have hours, not days."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"To do what?"

"Get Marian."

"Before Shaw does."

Evelyn shook her head.

"We do not know where she is."

Daniel looked at the phrase from the contact protocol.

"She gave you a clue."

"What clue?"

"The front wheel was crooked."

Evelyn stared.

"That was just authentication."

"No."

Lorenzo suddenly understood.

"The bicycle."

Daniel nodded.

"Where did you ride it?"

Lorenzo thought back.

"Lakefront."

"Hawthorne."

"Sometimes to an old boathouse near Wilmette."

Isabella looked at him.

"Your father's boathouse."

Daniel pointed at the notebook.

"Lake Geneva had a heart symbol."

Evelyn shook her head.

"Wilmette is not Lake Geneva."

"No."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"But the boat was named Geneva."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"You remember that?"

"I hid Marian on it once."

Rafe was already gathering keys.

"Then we go to the boathouse."

Lorenzo stopped him.

"No convoy."

"No Moretti vehicles."

"No phones."

Evelyn picked up her coat.

Lorenzo looked at her.

"You stay."

She raised one eyebrow.

"We have done this scene."

"Shaw just told the country you are my coerced hostage."

"Then appearing without you would help."

"Exactly."

"You are not going to the boathouse."

Evelyn blinked.

"You are."

"With Daniel."

"And Rafe."

"I will create a reason for Shaw to look somewhere else."

"What reason?"

Lorenzo picked up a clean phone.

"I am going to surrender."

The room erupted.

Rafe said no first.

Isabella said it louder.

Daniel called it suicidal.

Evelyn simply stared.

Lorenzo waited for them to stop.

"Shaw needs me hidden."

"A fugitive is a story he controls."

"A man in federal custody becomes a problem he has to manage publicly."

Rafe shook his head.

"He can kill you in custody."

"Not easily after Evelyn's video."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"She made that harder."

Evelyn understood and hated that she did.

"You want them watching you while we find Marian."

"Yes."

"What if Shaw moves you somewhere private?"

"Then I will make sure the entire city knows where I am first."

Evelyn stepped close enough that nobody else could hear her whisper.

"This is a terrible plan."

"You said emotional men need someone to check their thinking."

"I checked."

"It is terrible."

A faint smile touched his mouth.

"Then we finally agree on something."

She wanted to tell him not to go.

The words felt too personal.

Instead she said.

"Do not let them make me save you twice."

His smile disappeared.

"Come back from the boathouse and you will not have to."

They held each other's gaze for one second too long.

May you like

Then Lorenzo walked out to surrender to the federal government.
