Chapter 18 - THE ENGAGEMENT TABLE

Victor Vane believed power was most effective when everyone could see it and nobody could name it.

That was why he had rebuilt Table Four.

That was why Celeste stood bound beside the same mirrored wall she had once used to coordinate Lorenzo's murder.

That was why Daniel Carter had been dragged into the restaurant where his daughter worked invisibly for nine months.

Victor did not simply want obedience.

He wanted memory rewritten in his favor.

Evelyn understood that because her own life had been rewritten by men who assumed she would never find the original pages.

She looked down at the pen in front of Lorenzo.

Black lacquer.

Gold trim.

Expensive enough to become a symbol after the fact.

Victor would probably frame the signed transfer.

"Read it," Evelyn said.

Victor looked at her.

"Excuse me?"

"The transfer."

"If Lorenzo is signing away control of half his assets, he should read it."

"His attorneys reviewed the structure."

Lorenzo glanced at the lawyers seated nearby.

"My attorneys are not here."

Victor smiled.

"Replacement counsel is."

A man near the end of the table lowered his eyes.

Janus in one sentence.

Replacement counsel.

Evelyn leaned back.

"Then we read slowly."

Victor's gaze sharpened.

"You are not a party to the agreement."

"Then why am I sitting here?"

No answer.

Evelyn smiled.

"Exactly."

Salvatore coughed to hide a laugh.

Victor's patience thinned.

"You are here because your father made you relevant."

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He remained between two guards.

"That must irritate you."

"A waitress becoming relevant because a man wrote her into a ledger."

Victor's eyes hardened.

"You think this is about class."

"No."

"I think it is about attention."

Evelyn looked around the table.

"You built a system around people nobody notices."

"Deputies."

"Assistants."

"Second sons."

"Replacement lawyers."

"Drivers."

"Waitresses."

"People who stand near power without being treated as powerful."

"Janus works because everyone watches the chair and ignores the person standing behind it."

A few faces changed.

Victor stared at her.

She had found the insult he could not dismiss.

His system was not genius.

It depended on the same blindness that had made Evelyn invisible.

"Enough," Victor said.

Lorenzo opened the transfer document.

"No."

Victor looked at him.

"She is right."

Lorenzo turned one page.

"We read."

It took nineteen minutes.

Evelyn knew because she watched the clock above the bar.

The same clock that had read 8:50 when she saw Celeste's message.

Victor grew more impatient with every clause.

That was useful.

Rafe's hidden cameras streamed silently to Marian, Father Tomas, Gilbert, three journalists, Judge Ruiz, and an inspector general through separate encrypted channels.

But the public release had not started.

They needed Victor to authenticate himself.

A face was not enough.

A speech was not enough.

They needed him to describe Janus in terms no lawyer could turn into a misunderstanding.

Lorenzo reached the signature page.

"Section twelve."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"What about it?"

"Continuity authorization transfers successor designation to Vane Foundation trustees."

"Temporary trustees."

"Named by whom?"

"The board."

"Which board?"

Victor did not answer immediately.

Salvatore did.

"Janus."

Every head turned toward him.

Victor's eyes became ice.

Salvatore smiled.

"We are among friends."

"No need for euphemisms."

Victor said quietly.

"You are injured and confused."

"There is that word again."

Celeste spoke from the wall.

"Confused."

Victor did not look at her.

Celeste continued.

"When Mother asked why her foundation money disappeared, you called her confused."

"When I asked why my tutor vanished, you called me confused."

"When I found Shaw's contingency order for the Obsidian, you called me confused."

Victor finally turned.

"You are alive because I have tolerated your weakness."

Celeste smiled through the bruise.

"No."

"I am alive because you still need a Vane signature."

Victor's face changed.

There.

Evelyn felt the room lean toward it.

Victor stepped closer to his daughter.

"You overestimate your importance."

"Then sign without me."

Celeste held out her bound hands.

"Go ahead."

Victor said nothing.

Celeste laughed.

"That is what I thought."

Evelyn looked at the false Marian.

The woman seemed frightened.

Not an actor.

A hostage too.

Victor had dressed someone to resemble Marian from a distance.

Evelyn wondered who she was.

A housekeeper.

An employee.

Another invisible person used because powerful people assumed nobody would ask her name.

Evelyn decided she would ask.

Lorenzo pointed at the signature blocks.

Three lines.

Vane.

Moretti.

Federal Trustee.

"Who signs federal?"

Victor looked toward the far door.

It opened.

Peter Kline entered.

Suspended Deputy Marshal Peter Kline.

Except he was not dressed as a marshal now.

He wore a suit.

No badge.

Evelyn understood immediately.

Kline had not been removed.

He had been replaced into a new role before the suspension was announced.

Janus again.

Kline took the third chair.

"The emergency trustee designation was executed this afternoon."

Lorenzo looked at him.

"By what authority?"

"A sealed court order."

"Which judge?"

Kline smiled.

"One who understands continuity."

Rafe would search that later.

If there was a later.

Victor placed another document in front of Lorenzo.

"Sign."

Lorenzo picked up the pen.

Evelyn's heartbeat increased.

This was the dangerous part.

They needed Victor talking.

But if Lorenzo actually signed, Janus might gain legal control faster than they could stop it.

The signature had to be invalid.

Daniel had prepared for that.

Lorenzo signed with his left hand.

His legal signature was always right-handed.

A small detail.

A deliberate defect.

Victor did not notice.

Kline did.

His eyes narrowed.

Before he could speak, Salvatore reached for the document.

"My turn?"

Victor slapped his hand away.

"You have no standing."

"After everything I built?"

"You built a primitive version."

Victor's contempt finally surfaced.

"You thought Janus was about criminal families."

"It was never about families."

Evelyn felt the moment arrive.

She looked toward the mirrored camera.

Keep talking.

Salvatore understood too.

"Then enlighten us."

Victor smiled.

He could not resist.

"Families decay."

"Governments change."

"Corporations merge."

"Men die."

"Janus survives because it is not an organization."

"It is succession itself."

"We identify the person most likely to inherit authority before they inherit it."

"We solve their debts."

"Protect their secrets."

"Create their opportunities."

"By the time the chair becomes theirs, so do we."

The room was silent.

Victor continued.

"You call that corruption because you still believe institutions are clean before someone touches them."

"They are not."

"They are hungry."

"Janus simply feeds them first."

Evelyn's earpiece clicked once.

Rafe's signal.

We have it.

Victor had authenticated the philosophy and mechanism on camera.

Now they needed names.

Daniel spoke from beside the guards.

"And when someone refuses to eat?"

Victor looked at him.

"They are replaced."

"Anna refused."

Evelyn's body went cold.

Victor looked at her.

"Your mother was unfortunate."

Daniel's face twisted.

"Say what you did."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Why?"

"For closure?"

"Confession is a religious luxury."

"I deal in outcomes."

Father Tomas would hate him, Evelyn thought.

Daniel pulled against the guards.

"You poisoned her."

Victor looked bored.

"A physician adjusted medication."

Evelyn's nails cut into her palm.

There it was.

Not enough remorse.

Enough fact.

"And Matteo?" Lorenzo asked.

Victor glanced toward Salvatore.

"Ask your uncle."

Salvatore did not hide.

"I ordered the crash."

The room reacted.

Several people looked toward exits.

Victor noticed.

"Sit."

They sat.

The command was automatic.

Evelyn saw the fear Janus had cultivated.

Victor looked at Kline.

"Federal signature."

Kline signed.

Then Victor turned toward Celeste.

"Bring her."

A guard moved Celeste to the table.

Her bound hands were freed.

Victor placed the pen before her.

"Sign."

Celeste looked at Marian's double.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Evelyn.

"Mother."

The false Marian flinched.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

Celeste smiled.

"That is not my mother."

The room changed instantly.

Victor turned toward the woman.

She began crying.

"I am sorry."

Victor grabbed her arm.

"Who are you?"

Evelyn stood.

"That is a good question."

Victor looked at her.

Evelyn asked the woman.

"What is your name?"

The woman swallowed.

"Nina."

"Nina what?"

"Nina Alvarez."

"Where do you work?"

"Vane House."

"Housekeeping."

Evelyn looked at Victor.

Of course.

A housekeeper.

Invisible enough to become someone else's dead wife.

"Let her go."

Victor shoved Nina toward a guard.

"Take her out."

The guard reached for her.

Celeste stepped between them.

"No."

Victor slapped Celeste.

The sound cracked through the dining room.

Lorenzo rose.

So did Evelyn.

Victor looked around.

"Sit down."

Nobody moved.

Something had broken.

Not a window.

Not a door.

The habit of obedience.

Celeste touched her cheek.

Then she laughed softly.

"You still do that when the script changes."

Victor's face went white with anger.

Celeste looked at Evelyn.

"I switched sides."

Evelyn met her eyes.

"Prove it."

Celeste turned to the mirrored wall.

"Mother."

A hidden speaker activated.

Marian's real voice filled the room.

"I am here."

Victor froze.

For the first time all night, he looked afraid.

Marian continued.

"Victor, the command archive is copied."

"Your accounts are copied."

"The childhood files are copied."

"The recordings are copied."

"And every word you have said tonight is being stored outside your control."

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

"Cut power."

Nothing happened.

Rafe had isolated the cameras.

Victor shouted.

"Cut it now!"

Evelyn looked at the clock.

12:17 a.m.

The moment everyone at the table wanted to hurry.

She slowed down.

"Victor."

He looked at her.

Evelyn smiled.

"Sunlight."

Across Chicago, the third ledger began uploading.
