Chapter 9

Family court was already scheduled for the next morning.
Vanessa’s attorney had filed an emergency petition before she disappeared, claiming Adrian was violent and mentally unstable.
If Adrian failed to appear, the petition might remain open.
If he appeared, Vanessa intended to reach Lily.
Police wanted the hearing moved.
The judge refused to delay it without confirming the threat’s authenticity.
So Ruiz created a plan.
Lily would remain in a protected room away from the courtroom.
Plainclothes officers would surround the building.
Adrian would enter through the front doors and make Vanessa believe Lily was nearby.
The courthouse was crowded with reporters.
Adrian walked through them without answering questions.
Inside, Marcus sat beside his new attorney.
Eleanor sat behind him.
Vanessa’s chair was empty.
The judge entered.
“Where is the petitioner?”
Her attorney stood.
“I have been unable to contact Mrs. Hale.”
The judge frowned.
Adrian’s attorney presented the recordings, medical findings, bank transfers, and arrest warrants.
Then Maria testified by secure video.
Her voice shook, but she did not look away.
“I saw Vanessa put the baby outside. I saw her lock Lily in dark rooms. Mr. Hale did not know. When he was home, Vanessa pretended to be kind.”
Marcus watched in silence.
Then the independent DNA results arrived.
They confirmed he was Lily’s biological father.
His attorney immediately requested parental consideration.
Adrian stood.
“You gave up any right to call yourself her father when you helped Vanessa hurt her.”
The judge ordered him to sit.
Marcus leaned closer.
“She is mine.”
“No,” Adrian replied. “She is not property.”
At that moment, the courthouse lights went out.
Emergency alarms began ringing.
Ruiz spoke through Adrian’s earpiece.
“Stay where you are.”
A scream echoed from the hallway.
Adrian ignored the order and ran toward Lily’s protected room.
The guard outside was unconscious.
The door stood open.
Lily was gone.
Adrian’s phone rang.
Vanessa whispered, “Parking garage. Level four.”
He raced down the emergency stairs.
Ruiz and two officers followed at a distance.
On level four, Vanessa stood near the edge of the garage with Lily in front of her.
She held a gun against the child’s shoulder.
“Come alone,” Vanessa warned.
Adrian raised his hands.
“I’m here.”
“You destroyed my life.”
“You did that yourself.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You abused my children.”
“They were never supposed to matter more than me!”
Lily cried silently.
Adrian kept his voice steady.
“Let her go. Take me instead.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You’d die for another man’s child?”
“She is my daughter.”
“Marcus is her father.”
“Marcus is the man who betrayed her before she knew his name.”
Vanessa’s hand trembled.
“You should hate her.”
“I love her.”
“Why?”
“Because love is not blood. Love is staying. Love is listening. Love is walking into a burning house because your child is inside.”
Lily looked up at Vanessa.
“My daddy came for me.”
Vanessa’s face twisted with rage.
She pulled Lily backward.
Then Eleanor stepped from behind a concrete pillar.
“That’s enough.”
Vanessa turned the gun toward her.
“You helped us!”
“I did,” Eleanor said. “And I will regret it until I die.”
Marcus appeared from the stairwell behind the officers.
He had slipped away during the blackout.
“Vanessa,” he called. “Put the gun down.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I can get us out.”
“You’re lying.”
Marcus moved closer.
Vanessa aimed at him.
Lily bit Vanessa’s hand.
The gun fired.
Adrian lunged and pulled Lily away.
The bullet struck Marcus in the shoulder.
Officers tackled Vanessa before she could fire again.
Adrian wrapped his body around Lily.
“I’ve got you,” he repeated. “I’ve got you.”
Vanessa screamed as police handcuffed her.
Marcus lay bleeding on the concrete.
Eleanor knelt beside him, pressing her scarf against the wound.
Even after everything, she still tried to save her son.
Lily looked at Marcus.
“Is he really my father?”
Adrian’s heart broke.
“He helped create you,” he said gently. “But I am your dad, if you still want me.”
She threw her arms around his neck.
“I only want you.”
As police led Vanessa away, she looked back with hatred.
“This isn’t over.”
Ruiz tightened the handcuffs.
“For you, it is.”
May you like
But the family’s final battle would not happen in a parking garage.
It would happen in court, where Lily’s future would be decided.
