Chapter 7

The key belonged to a private bank in the city.

Police obtained a warrant and opened the box that afternoon.

Inside were passports, cash, and documents bearing different names.

Vanessa had prepared to disappear.

But there was something else.

A small black notebook contained dates, payments, and initials.

One set appeared repeatedly.

M.H.

Marcus Hale.

Another set was marked E.H.

Eleanor Hale.

The final pages listed doctors, school officials, and a private investigator.

Vanessa had paid people to create false medical files, silence Lily’s counselor, and monitor Adrian’s movements.

Ruiz turned a page.

“There’s a scheduled payment for tomorrow.”

“To whom?” Adrian asked.

“M.R.”

Claire looked over his shoulder.

“Maria Reyes.”

Maria had worked as the family’s housekeeper for nine years. She disappeared two weeks before the doghouse incident.

Vanessa claimed Maria had quit without warning.

The notebook listed an address beside her initials.

Police found Maria in a roadside motel.

She was alive, but terrified.

At first, she refused to speak.

Then Adrian showed her a photograph of Lily.

Maria began crying.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Vanessa threatened my son.”

“What did you see?”

“Everything.”

Maria had witnessed Vanessa withholding food, shouting at Lily, and putting sedatives into Noah’s bottle.

She recorded several incidents on her phone.

Marcus discovered the recordings and paid her to leave town.

When she threatened to go to the police, Vanessa sent photographs of Maria’s teenage son walking home from school.

“I thought leaving would protect him,” Maria whispered.

“Will you testify?” Ruiz asked.

Maria looked at Adrian.

“If I do, can you protect my boy?”

“Yes,” Adrian said. “Whatever it takes.”

Her recordings provided the evidence police needed.

Arrest warrants were issued for Marcus, Eleanor, and Vanessa on multiple felony charges.

Marcus was already in custody.

Eleanor confessed to helping with the sedatives but claimed Vanessa had manipulated her.

No one believed she was innocent.

Still, Vanessa remained missing.

Three days passed.

Adrian brought Lily and Noah to Claire’s secure apartment.

He installed new locks and kept police outside the building.

Lily barely slept.

Every noise made her sit up.

One night, Adrian found her hiding under the kitchen table.

“She’s coming back,” Lily whispered.

“The police are looking for her.”

“She said she would take everything you love.”

Adrian sat on the floor beside her.

“She tried. She failed.”

“What if she tries again?”

“Then she will fail again.”

Lily studied his face.

“Were you scared at the fire?”

“Yes.”

“Grown-ups get scared?”

“All the time.”

“But you came inside.”

“Being brave doesn’t mean you aren’t scared. It means love is stronger than your fear.”

Lily crawled into his arms.

For the first time since the doghouse, she fell asleep without crying.

The next morning, Adrian received a message from an unknown number.

A photograph showed Claire entering her office building.

Another showed Noah through the apartment window.

The final photograph showed Lily asleep in Adrian’s arms.

The picture had been taken inside the apartment.

Adrian stood abruptly.

He checked every room.

The police searched the apartment but found no intruder.

Then Claire noticed a small camera hidden inside a smoke detector.

Vanessa had been watching them.

Ruiz traced the device to a wireless network in the building.

The account belonged to a vacant apartment two floors below.

Police forced open the door.

No one was there.

On the wall, Vanessa had pinned photographs of the entire Hale family.

Red lines connected Adrian, Marcus, Eleanor, Claire, Lily, and Noah.

Across the center, she had written one sentence.

ONLY ONE OF THEM KNOWS WHO LILY’S REAL FATHER IS.

Adrian stared at the words.

Lily’s mother, Rachel, had died shortly after giving birth to Noah.

Before her death, she had insisted Adrian was Lily’s father.

He had never doubted her.

Claire touched his arm.

“This could be another lie.”

Adrian nodded.

Then Ruiz found a sealed DNA report on the table.

May you like

The report named Lily’s biological father.

Marcus Hale.
