Chapter 2

The first officer ordered Adrian to put the children down.

Lily clung to his neck.

“No! Don’t take Daddy!”

Adrian lowered himself carefully and placed Noah’s carrier on the porch.

“My children were abused,” he said. “The evidence is inside.”

Vanessa screamed again.

“He locked me in here!”

Officer Daniel Ruiz opened the doghouse. Vanessa crawled out, sobbing loudly.

She held her wrist as if it were broken.

“He hit me,” she cried. “He dragged me across the yard. I thought he was going to kill me.”

Lily stepped forward.

“She locked us in first!”

Vanessa pointed at her.

“She lies constantly. Adrian encourages it.”

Ruiz looked toward the house.

“You said there’s video?”

“Yes.”

Adrian led the officers into the living room.

The footage was still playing.

Everyone watched Vanessa push Lily and Noah into the doghouse.

Vanessa stopped crying.

“That isn’t what it looks like.”

Officer Ruiz turned slowly.

“It looks like you locked two children outside.”

“I was teaching Lily a lesson. Noah was only there for a minute.”

“Seven hours,” Adrian said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“The timestamp must be wrong.”

A second officer touched Ruiz’s shoulder.

“Paramedics are here.”

Lily and Noah were taken to the ambulance. Adrian stayed beside them while the medics checked for dehydration and exposure.

Noah had a fever.

Lily had bruises around one wrist.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “are we going home?”

“Not tonight.”

Her lower lip trembled.

“Did I do something bad?”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Behind them, Vanessa spoke quietly with Officer Ruiz.

Then Ruiz approached Adrian.

“I need you to come to the station.”

Adrian stared at him.

“You saw the video.”

“I did. Vanessa will also be questioned. But she has visible injuries, and you admitted locking her inside.”

“I stopped her from attacking Lily.”

“I understand. We still need a statement.”

Adrian called his sister, Claire.

She arrived at the hospital twenty minutes later, still wearing her work clothes.

The moment Lily saw her, she burst into tears.

“Aunt Claire!”

Claire held her tightly.

Adrian explained everything in a low voice.

Claire’s face turned white.

“I warned you about Vanessa.”

“This isn’t the time.”

“It became the time when she hurt your children.”

Adrian looked through the glass as doctors treated Noah.

“I thought they were safe.”

Claire softened.

“You trusted your wife. That doesn’t make this your fault.”

But Adrian did blame himself.

At the station, detectives separated him from Vanessa.

For two hours, Adrian answered every question.

Then Detective Ruiz entered carrying a tablet.

“We have a problem.”

“What problem?”

“The encrypted backup disappeared.”

Adrian stood.

“That’s impossible.”

“The television system restarted while everyone was at the hospital. The file is gone.”

“The officers saw it.”

“They did, but Vanessa’s attorney claims it was edited.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Her attorney is already here?”

Ruiz nodded.

“His name is Marcus Hale.”

Adrian froze.

Marcus was not just an attorney.

He was Adrian’s older brother.

The interrogation-room door opened.

Marcus entered in an expensive gray suit.

“I’m sorry,” he said, though his eyes showed no sorrow. “Vanessa called me months ago.”

“For what?”

“To protect herself from you.”

Adrian stared at his brother.

“You know she abused Lily and Noah.”

“I know you assaulted your wife.”

Marcus placed several photographs on the table.

They showed Vanessa with bruises on her arms and shoulders.

Some appeared weeks old.

“I never caused those.”

“She says you did.”

Adrian looked closer.

Vanessa had been building a case against him.

Marcus leaned forward.

“If you fight this, the children could enter temporary foster care.”

“You’re threatening me.”

“I’m giving you a choice. Leave the house tonight. Give Vanessa temporary control of the estate, and she won’t press charges.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“This was never about the children.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“No. It was about making you surrender.”

The door opened again.

Claire stood beside Officer Ruiz, holding Lily’s small backpack.

“We found something,” she said.

She reached inside and removed a tiny silver camera.

May you like

Lily had hidden it in her stuffed rabbit.

And unlike the mansion’s system, no one had erased its memory.
