Chapter 17

Sophie became a child forensic interviewer.

She had a gift for sitting still with children until truth felt safe enough to come out.

She never rushed.

Never led.

Never used fear.

In her office, she kept a framed drawing of a car with open doors.

Children asked about it sometimes.

She said, “It reminds me that doors should open.”

Simple.

True.

She worked on cases that made me proud and furious.

Children locked in rooms.

Children coached to lie.

Children used as weapons in adult grief and jealousy.

She came home some weekends and sat quietly in the backyard.

I learned not to ask too fast.

Eventually, she would speak.

May you like

Or not.

Both were allowed.
