Chapter 13

Sophie became a fierce kid.
Not loud all the time.
But clear.
At school, when a classmate said stepmothers were always evil, Sophie corrected him.
“Some are. Some aren’t. Mine was.”
That was Sophie.
Precise.
She joined a children’s theater group and loved playing detectives.
No surprise.
She also began volunteering with Elaine at a cancer support fundraiser in Rachel’s memory.
Rachel became more present in our lives, not less.
Photos.
Stories.
Recipes.
Music.
Sophie learned her mother’s favorite song on piano.
The first time she played it, I had to leave the room to cry.
She followed me.
“Sad?”
“Yes.”
“Bad sad?”
“No. Love sad.”
She nodded.
May you like
“Okay.”
She sat beside me and played it again softly.
