Chapter 14

Vanessa wrote from prison when Sophie was twelve.

The letter came through Karen.

I read it first.

Vanessa claimed therapy had helped her understand her jealousy.

She wrote:

I saw Rachel in Sophie, and I hated feeling second to a dead woman. I am ashamed.

Then:

Please tell Sophie I know she did not choose to leave.

I showed Dr. Greene.

Then, after Sophie asked, we showed her that line only.

Sophie read it.

Then said, “She knew that when she wrote it.”

“Yes.”

“Then it doesn’t help.”

“That’s okay.”

“Can I throw it away?”

“Yes.”

She did.

No ceremony.

No burning.

Just trash.

That was healing too.
