Chapter 7

My heart stopped when I saw Holly’s empty bed.

Then a small voice came from the closet.

“I’m here.”

Brandon tore open the door.

Holly sat beneath her winter coats holding her safety phone.

A man had opened the window and whispered the family password.

“Redbox,” she said. “But Detective Ortiz told me passwords only work once.”

Holly hid and activated the silent alarm.

The intruder heard police outside and escaped without finding her.

She had saved herself by remembering one simple rule.

Detective Ortiz collected a muddy glove from the windowsill.

Fingerprints belonged to Gene’s former driver, Martin Shaw.

Martin had transported Gene for twenty years. He knew every family address, schedule, and secret.

Police found his apartment empty.

A map of our neighborhood lay on his table beside photographs of Holly.

One image showed her entering Cole Family Bank.

Gene was still directing people from jail.

Investigators searched her attorney’s calls and found coded messages sent through legal paperwork.

Her new attorney claimed confidentiality.

A judge disagreed after reviewing the evidence.

The messages ordered Martin to take Holly to the private bank vault.

Gene needed her fingerprint before the company loan deadline.

Detective Ortiz created a trap.

Cole Medical announced that Holly would visit the bank with Brandon to restore the trust accounts.

In reality, Holly stayed at a protected location with me.

An officer of similar size entered the vehicle wearing Holly’s red coat.

Martin followed the car.

Police arrested him inside the bank parking garage.

He carried a sedative, plastic restraints, and a document transferring Holly’s shares to Gene.

The company was safe from the immediate kidnapping threat.

But Gene’s twenty million dollars remained locked.

The bank refused to release it without Holly’s fingerprint.

Brandon faced an impossible decision.

If he brought Holly to the vault, she could help save thousands of jobs.

She would also enter the exact place Gene’s people had planned to take her.

“No,” I said. “A seven-year-old is not responsible for saving a company.”

Holly listened from the hallway.

“Will people lose their houses?”

“That is not your fault.”

“Can my finger help them?”

Brandon knelt in front of her.

“It can. But you don’t have to do it.”

Holly thought quietly.

“Can police come?”

“Yes.”

“Can you hold my other hand?”

“Always.”

The next morning, state officers secured every floor of the bank.

Holly entered the brass-lined vault between Brandon and me.

Her hand shook as she pressed one finger against the scanner.

A drawer opened.

Inside was not money.

It contained a tablet and another letter from Arthur.

Gene will believe this account holds what she stole. It does not. The real funds were transferred to protected trusts for every grandchild. Holly’s fingerprint opens this message because I trust the youngest voice to remind the family what matters.

The tablet displayed the complete financial history of Gene’s theft.

Arthur had moved the money before his death.

Cole Medical’s hidden debt belonged to Gene personally, not the company. She had falsified board guarantees.

The workers’ jobs were safe.

Brandon laughed with relief.

Holly looked at Arthur’s photograph on the screen.

“Grandpa tricked Grandma.”

“He protected everyone,” Brandon said.

The tablet also contained evidence that Samuel and Gene altered Arthur’s medication before he died.

His death had been ruled natural.

A medical review found unusually high levels of a heart drug in his stored blood sample.

Gene had not only stolen from Arthur.

She may have killed him.

Detective Ortiz informed her inside the jail interview room.

Gene showed no grief.

“He was going to leave me with nothing.”

“He was your husband,” Brandon said.

“He chose Holly over me.”

“He chose truth over you.”

Gene stood and struck the glass between them.

“Everything happened because of that child!”

Brandon rose.

“No. Everything happened because you could not control her.”

As officers removed Gene, her attorney received an urgent call.

Paige had escaped from police transport.

A guard had been injured.

And a stolen patrol car was heading toward the bank where Holly still stood inside the vault.
