Chapter 6

Samuel reached the warehouse exit before Brandon caught him.

He tried striking Brandon with a metal case, but Detective Ortiz tackled him and placed him in handcuffs.

“I only followed Gene’s instructions,” he shouted.

“You were Arthur’s attorney,” Brandon said.

“And Gene controlled my career!”

“She didn’t control your choices.”

Samuel had altered trust records, hidden Owen’s identity, and helped Gene transfer money from the grandchildren’s accounts.

He also created the false sale of the mountain cabin used to hold Holly.

Detective Ortiz arrested him for fraud and conspiracy.

The red ledger gave prosecutors enough evidence to freeze Gene’s assets.

But one account remained empty.

Two million dollars had moved the morning after Christmas.

The transfer carried Brandon’s signature.

He had never approved it.

Samuel admitted creating the authorization, but claimed he did not know where the money went.

Holly did.

“Grandma said she was buying me a new daddy.”

Every adult turned toward her.

Gene had said it during the kidnapping while speaking to Owen.

She promised him two million dollars if he convinced Holly to reject Brandon in court.

Owen had already received half.

The remaining money was hidden under another name.

Owen agreed to return it in exchange for prosecutors considering his cooperation. He confessed that Gene instructed him to frighten Holly but not physically harm her.

“That doesn’t make you innocent,” I told him.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He looked toward the floor.

“I saw her once when she was a baby.”

Brandon stiffened.

Owen admitted Melissa had brought Holly to meet him before the adoption. She offered him a chance to be part of their daughter’s life.

He refused.

“I wasn’t ready.”

“No one is ready,” Brandon said. “Parents stay anyway.”

Owen cried.

He claimed he signed a private consent document allowing Brandon to adopt Holly, but Gene later destroyed it.

The court records still proved proper notice, yet Owen’s confession ended his legal challenge.

He permanently surrendered every claim.

Holly asked whether she had to meet him again.

“No,” Brandon said. “That choice belongs to you.”

She thought for a moment.

“I don’t want to.”

No one pressured her.

At Gene’s bail hearing, prosecutors played the Christmas security video. The judge watched her insult Holly, grab for her, and scream after receiving the returned key.

Then Detective Ortiz presented the tracker from the candle, the copied house key, Paige’s burglary footage, and the mountain-cabin evidence.

Gene was denied bail.

She looked toward Holly as deputies removed her.

“You have destroyed this family!”

Holly held Brandon’s hand.

“No. I just gave back your key.”

The story spread through local news.

Some people praised Holly’s courage. Others accused us of turning a private family disagreement into a public attack on an elderly woman.

Gene’s friends posted photographs of the expensive gifts she gave other grandchildren.

They called her generous.

None of them mentioned that she stole from those same children.

Cole Medical’s board suspended Gene and appointed Brandon temporary chairman.

He did not want the position, but someone needed to protect the employees and restore the trust accounts.

The first board meeting revealed another crisis.

Gene had borrowed against the company without approval. If the loans were not repaid within thirty days, thousands of workers could lose their jobs.

The missing trust money was not enough.

Gene had hidden more than twenty million dollars.

Samuel offered to reveal its location if prosecutors reduced his charges.

He claimed Arthur had created an emergency account before his death. Gene moved the stolen money there but could not access it without Holly.

“Why Holly?” I asked.

“Arthur designed the account so his youngest grandchild would hold the final authorization.”

At the time, Holly was the youngest.

Her fingerprint could unlock the funds.

Gene had not kidnapped Holly only to remove her from the trust.

She needed Holly alive and frightened enough to obey.

Detective Ortiz increased security around our house.

That night, the alarm sounded.

Brandon checked Holly’s room.

Her bed was empty.

The window stood open.

May you like

On the pillow lay the candle Gene had given her at Christmas.

Its black tracker was blinking again.
