Chapter 2

Brandon called the police while I opened our security cameras on my phone.

A hooded figure moved through Holly’s bedroom.

The person emptied Melissa’s memory box onto the bed, searched beneath the mattress, and opened every drawer.

Then the intruder removed a small wooden bird from Holly’s bookshelf.

“Mommy Melissa gave me that,” Holly cried.

The figure turned toward the camera.

It was Brandon’s sister, Paige.

Brandon called her immediately.

She ignored him.

We drove home with the police following. Paige was gone when we arrived, but muddy footprints crossed Holly’s carpet.

Melissa’s wooden bird had disappeared.

So had the original adoption certificate proving Brandon was Holly’s legal father.

Gene had sent Paige into our house while the family remained at Christmas dinner.

Holly stood in the doorway of her damaged room.

“Why does Aunt Paige hate me?”

“She doesn’t know how to love people without asking what they can give her,” I said.

Brandon picked up Melissa’s broken photograph.

“My family is never coming near her again.”

A police officer collected fingerprints and downloaded the camera footage. Paige had entered using a key copied from Gene’s emergency key before Holly returned it.

The tracker inside the candle helped Gene confirm we had not gone home.

This was not a cruel joke.

It was a planned burglary.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived the next morning.

She asked why anyone would want Holly’s adoption papers or wooden bird.

Brandon looked ashamed.

“My father created a trust before he died.”

His father, Arthur Cole, had founded a chain of medical-supply companies. Gene controlled the family business after his death, but ownership would eventually transfer to his grandchildren.

Arthur had included Holly by name.

“She inherits the same share as every other grandchild,” Brandon said. “Mother opposed it.”

“How much is the share worth?” Detective Ortiz asked.

“About six million dollars.”

I stared at him.

Brandon had told me a trust existed, but not its value.

“I didn’t want Holly raised thinking money decided who she was.”

Detective Ortiz nodded toward the empty space on the shelf.

“What was inside the wooden bird?”

“I don’t know.”

Holly raised her hand as if she were at school.

“Grandpa Arthur said it held a secret.”

Brandon turned toward her.

“When did he say that?”

“Before he went to heaven. He told me the bird would sing if Grandma Gene lied.”

Arthur had died two years earlier.

Holly explained that the wooden bird opened with a tiny key hidden inside Melissa’s locket. Gene had searched the memory box because she wanted that key.

Holly still wore the locket around her neck.

I took it off and found a narrow silver key behind Melissa’s photograph.

Gene did not know Holly carried it.

We called the family attorney, Samuel Reed. He confirmed that Arthur had prepared a private statement before his death.

Samuel was supposed to receive it from Brandon after the trust came under dispute.

“Arthur said the statement was hidden in a wooden bird,” Samuel told us. “It may prove Gene misused trust money.”

Paige had the bird.

Gene had been searching for the key.

Without it, she might destroy the bird to reach whatever was inside.

Detective Ortiz obtained warrants for both women.

Police found Paige at Gene’s estate. She claimed Holly gave her permission to enter the house.

The camera proved otherwise.

Officers arrested her for burglary.

Gene refused to open her door.

While police waited for a warrant to search the estate, Gene called Brandon.

“You humiliated me in front of the entire family.”

“You humiliated a seven-year-old.”

“That child is stealing your real children’s inheritance.”

“I don’t have other children.”

“You will.”

Brandon’s face hardened.

“What did you take from Holly’s room?”

“What belongs to the Cole family.”

“Holly is a Cole.”

Gene laughed.

“Not after the court sees what I found.”

The line went dead.

A courier arrived at our house minutes later.

He delivered a petition challenging Brandon’s adoption of Holly.

According to the papers, Holly’s biological father had returned.

He wanted custody.

And he claimed Brandon had stolen his daughter.
