Chapter 5

Marcus was arrested before sunset.

Not dramatically.

Not with shouting anymore.

Just handcuffs.

A stunned face.

And my baby sleeping safely two rooms away with my father standing guard.

Harrison tried to call lawyers.

Judge Reed took his phone.

“Evidence hold,” she said.

He stared at her.

“You hate my family.”

“Yes,” she replied. “But today I am following the law.”

That was the difference between them.

Harrison’s money had always treated law like furniture.

Something to move.

Something to buy.

Something to hide behind.

Detective Ellis took my statement slowly.

She asked about the first shove.

The first threat.

The first time Marcus took my car keys.

The time his mother, Patricia, told me a good wife never makes police part of marriage.

I spoke until my throat burned.

Then Sarah Dean, my attorney, arrived.

She hugged me first.

Then went to work.

“The house is in Emily’s name,” she told Detective Ellis. “Purchased with inheritance from Rebecca Lane’s estate.”

Harrison’s head lifted.

“She has Rebecca’s assets?”

Dad looked at him.

“You didn’t know?”

Harrison’s fear returned.

Sarah opened another file.

“Rebecca’s estate was sealed because Thomas was protecting Emily. But now Marcus has attempted custody coercion, financial theft, and assault.”

“What theft?” Marcus snapped from the hallway.

Sarah smiled coldly.

“The trust transfers you tried to push through while Emily was in labor.”

My stomach dropped.

“What transfers?”

Sarah looked at me gently.

“Marcus attempted to move the house and Rebecca’s remaining trust into a Vance-managed holding company this morning.”

I stared at him.

“I was giving birth.”

He would not meet my eyes.

Dad whispered, “Same playbook.”

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained one photo.

My mother’s old diary.
