Chapter 17

I testified for two hours.

My voice shook only once.

When they played Marcus’s words.

Just reminding her who’s in charge.

Lily was not in court.

I would not let that room touch her.

But her absence gave me strength.

I spoke for her.

For myself.

For my mother.

The defense asked why I stayed with Marcus after earlier abuse.

I looked at the jury.

“Because abuse doesn’t begin with bruises. It begins with apology. Charm. Isolation. Shame. By the time the hand closes around your throat, part of you has been trained to wonder if you caused it.”

No one moved.

Then I said, “But I did not cause it.”

Dad cried silently in the front row.

Judge Reed testified about Rebecca’s original report.

She apologized on the stand.

“I was young,” she said. “I was pressured. But I should have fought harder.”

The prosecutor asked, “Why fight now?”

She looked at me.

“Because Rebecca’s daughter lived long enough to finish what her mother started.”

Harrison testified next.

He named Victor.

Patricia.

Officers.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

He cried.

Some jurors looked moved.

I did not.

His truth mattered.

His tears belonged to him.

Marcus took a plea before the jury returned.

Twenty-five years for assault, conspiracy, coercion, and attempted kidnapping of Lily.

He asked to apologize.

I declined.

The verdict against Victor came on a Friday.

Guilty.

Murder.

Conspiracy.

Witness intimidation.

Attempted kidnapping.

Human trafficking.

Guilty on every count.
