Chapter 15

Harrison gave testimony.
Not for forgiveness.
For survival.
Maybe both.
He admitted Victor assaulted Rebecca.
Admitted Patricia delivered threats.
Admitted the family buried reports, paid officers, and moved evidence.
He admitted he suspected I was his biological child and never checked because knowing would require action.
That was his greatest sin.
Not ignorance.
Avoidance.
The case exploded.
Rebecca Lane’s death was reopened nationally.
Reporters camped outside the hospital.
Sarah blocked every camera from seeing Lily.
Dad blocked every person who forgot I was recovering from childbirth.
Marcus tried to change his plea.
He wanted sympathy.
He claimed he had been raised inside lies.
The prosecutor responded with footage of him smirking while I held our newborn with bruises around my neck.
Sympathy died there.
Patricia agreed to testify against Victor after Harrison did.
Their marriage collapsed in statements and depositions.
No dramatic fight.
Just rot exposed to air.
Victor remained missing.
Then a package arrived for me.
No return address.
Inside was my mother’s necklace.
The one from every photograph.
A note rested beneath it.
Rebecca screamed your name before she died.
Dad read it and went white.
I did not cry.
I handed it to Detective Ellis.
“Find him.”
She nodded.
“We will.”
That night, I placed Mom’s necklace beside Lily.
My daughter’s fingers curled around the chain.

I whispered, “Your grandmother was brave.”
And for the first time, saying grandmother meant someone good.
