Chapter 9

Claire was arrested that evening.

Charges stacked quickly.

Child endangerment.

False imprisonment.

Fraud.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

Abuse of court authority.

Megan’s illegal commitment became the center of a scandal that spread beyond our family.

My father’s name returned to the news.

Judge Edward Vale.

Beloved.

Respected.

Dead.

Corrupt.

I watched reporters stand outside the courthouse talking about him like he was a fallen statue.

I wanted to scream.

Not because they were wrong.

Because they were late.

Megan stayed in the hospital for evaluation.

Not because she belonged there.

Because years of forced medication had damaged her body.

Emma refused to sleep unless Megan held her hand.

Lily refused to leave Emma.

So I slept in a chair between both beds like a guard who had arrived years after the danger.

One night, Megan woke and saw me watching the girls.

“You blame yourself,” she said.

“Yes.”

“You were lied to by professionals. By your father. By your wife.”

“I still believed them.”

She looked at Emma.

“So did the police. So did doctors. So did judges. That is why men like Edward win.”

Her voice was soft, but not weak.

“What matters now is what you do after knowing.”

I nodded.

“What do you need from me?”

“The truth. No soft version.”

So I gave it.

I told her I had married Claire two years after she disappeared.

That Lily was four.

That I had loved Claire once.

That I hated myself for it now.

Megan listened.

Then said, “Lily is innocent.”

“I know.”

“So is Emma.”

“I know.”

“And you?”

I looked away.

Megan whispered, “You are responsible now. That is different from guilty then.”

May you like

I did not believe it yet.

But I wanted to.
