Chapter 8

Briar Hill denied having Megan.

At first.

Then Detective Harris arrived with a warrant.

Their tone changed.

Megan Vale was not listed under her name.

She was under Patient 314.

No visitors.

No phone privileges.

Court-ordered long-term care signed by my father.

Renewed by Claire after his death.

I drove behind the police car with Julia beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

At Briar Hill, a doctor tried to delay us.

Detective Harris did not blink.

“Open the door.”

Megan sat by a barred window in a pale blue robe.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face thinner.

But when she turned, the years fell away and crushed me.

“Ryan?”

I could not move.

She stood slowly.

“You came.”

My voice broke.

“I didn’t know.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

That forgiveness hurt worse than blame.

Julia stepped in.

Megan saw her and smiled through tears.

“You grew up.”

Julia sobbed.

“I’m sorry.”

Megan hugged her.

Then looked at me.

“Emma?”

“She’s alive.”

Megan’s knees gave way.

I caught her before she fell.

“She’s alive?” she whispered.

“Yes. She found Lily. Or Lily found her.”

Megan laughed and cried at once.

“My brave baby.”

The reunion happened at the hospital under doctor supervision.

Emma stood frozen when Megan entered.

Megan dropped to her knees.

“My star.”

Emma stared.

Then her face crumpled.

“Mama?”

Megan opened her arms.

Emma ran.

The sound Megan made when she held her daughter was not crying.

It was five years of stolen motherhood tearing open in one breath.

Lily held my hand.

“Daddy, is Emma staying?”

I looked at Megan holding our daughter.
