Chapter 3

I called 911.

Claire lunged for my phone.

I stepped back, shielding both girls.

“Don’t,” I warned.

She froze.

For ten years, Claire had seen me as soft.

Patient.

Easy to guide.

That version of me died in Lily’s bedroom.

The dispatcher asked what emergency I had.

“There is a child inside my wall,” I said. “My wife knew she was there. The child says she is mine.”

Claire started sobbing.

“Ryan, please. You don’t understand what Megan did.”

I looked at Emma.

She was staring at the sandwich crumbs on Lily’s floor like food might vanish if she blinked.

“What Megan did?”

Claire’s tears stopped too quickly.

“She was unstable. She left her child. I protected this family.”

Lily whispered, “Mommy lies.”

Claire’s head snapped toward her.

Lily hid behind my leg.

That small movement told me another truth.

This secret had not only hurt Emma.

It had taught my daughter fear.

Police arrived twelve minutes later.

So did paramedics.

Emma screamed when they tried to take her.

I knelt.

“They need to help you.”

“Will you come?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Lily.

“My sandwich friend too?”

Lily wiped her face.

“I’m coming.”

Claire tried one last time.

“She belongs to me. I’ve cared for her.”

Officer Daniels looked at the wall opening.

Then at Emma’s condition.

“No, ma’am. That is not care.”

They took Claire into the hallway.

As she passed me, she whispered, “If you dig this up, your father goes down too.”

My father had been dead for three years.

But fear moved through me anyway.
