Chapter 9

The first time Mara met Lily, neither child knew what to do.

Lily hid behind my leg.

Mara hid behind her counselor.

They stared at each other like two small survivors from different storms.

Lily spoke first.

“Grandma bad.”

Mara nodded slowly.

“Grandma lied.”

Lily held out a cracker.

Mara looked at the counselor.

The counselor nodded.

Mara took it.

That was the beginning.

Not friendship yet.

Not sisterhood.

A cracker.

Sometimes healing starts very small.

Meanwhile, Ryan tried to write me letters.

Nora intercepted them.

His first one said he was sorry.

His second said Diane controlled him.

His third asked if I could think of Lily’s need for a father.

I told Nora to stop summarizing.

“I know enough.”

Claire read Ryan’s letters to her.

She asked the advocate to help burn them.

Mara watched.

“Can we burn Grandma’s too?”

Claire smiled faintly.

“Court needs those.”

Mara sighed.

“Court ruins fun.”

For the first time, Claire laughed.

A broken, beautiful sound.

Diane’s lawyer tried to argue she was a devoted grandmother.

Then prosecutors released photos of Claire’s locked room at the facility, the boarding home records for Mara, and Lily’s hospital report.

Public sympathy died fast.

But I had stopped caring what strangers thought.

My job was simple.

Keep Lily safe.
