Chapter 7

Mara was four.

That was what the old birth records showed.

Claire gave birth seven months before her fall.

Then Diane filed emergency guardianship claims, accusing Claire of mental instability.

After the fall, Diane took control of Claire’s care.

Mara vanished into “private family placement.”

Ryan told no one.

He married me while his wife lived in a facility and his daughter lived God knew where.

Police questioned him for fourteen hours.

He broke in the thirteenth.

Mara was alive.

Diane had placed her in a religious boarding home under a false last name.

Ryan claimed he thought it was temporary.

I was starting to hate that word.

Temporary.

Like years could be folded small if people felt guilty enough.

Mara was found two states away.

She had been told her mother abandoned her.

When police brought her to a child advocacy center, she would not speak.

Claire was told carefully.

I was there because she asked.

She cried without sound.

Her body shook so hard the nurse had to hold her shoulders.

“She hates me,” Claire whispered.

“No,” I said. “She was lied to.”

Claire looked at me.

“So were you.”

I thought of Ryan.

His grief act.

His soft voice.

His stories about losing Claire.

“Yes,” I whispered. “So was I.”

That night, Lily came home from the hospital to Rachel’s apartment.

She breathed normally.

She still flinched at bottles.

But she was alive.

I held her and promised every truth I knew how to promise.

“No one will give you medicine without Mommy knowing. No one will hold you down. No one will make you quiet.”

May you like

She touched my face.

“Mommy loud.”
