Chapter 8

Dr. Price was arrested next.

His records betrayed him.

He had prescribed Claire sedatives far above normal limits.

He had signed wellness forms claiming Lily was “difficult to soothe” without examining her properly.

He had billed Diane privately for “family stabilization consultations.”

Nora called it medical abuse.

Detective Alvarez called it conspiracy.

I called it horror with letterhead.

Ryan was arrested for fraud, child endangerment, bigamy-related offenses, and obstruction.

Diane faced expanded charges.

Claire’s guardianship was suspended immediately.

A court-appointed advocate took over her care.

For the first time in five years, Diane could not decide what happened to Claire’s body.

I sat beside Claire when the order came through.

The advocate read it aloud.

Claire closed her eyes.

“Free?”

The advocate smiled.

“Yes. The court is protecting you now.”

Claire reached for my hand.

I took it.

Mara met Claire one week later.

The reunion happened in a therapy room with soft chairs and two counselors.

Mara stood by the door clutching a stuffed rabbit.

Claire sat in her wheelchair, shaking.

“Mara,” she whispered.

Mara stared.

“Grandma said you didn’t want me.”

Claire sobbed.

“No. Wanted. Always.”

Mara’s face broke.

She stepped forward.

Then ran.

Claire held her as best she could.

I turned away and cried into my sleeve.

Lily, sitting on Rachel’s lap beside me, whispered, “Girl found mommy.”

May you like

“Yes,” I said.
