Chapter 7

Rebecca found the money trail.
It always comes down to money with people who pretend it is about family.
Eleanor had debts.
Not public ones.
Private.
Gambling.
Bad investments.
A failed winery she hid behind shell companies.
Harold had affairs.
Women.
Payments.
Children he denied.
Adrian had known.
Instead of exposing them, he helped turn secrets into leverage.
Lila had threatened to go public after Sophie was born.
Nora had threatened before her.
Danielle had signed something under pressure and vanished.
Detective Stone found Danielle alive in Portland.
Different name.
Scarred by fear.
She flew in with federal protection.
When she entered the conference room, Maya started crying.
Danielle looked at me.
“You own the condo?”
“Yes.”
“I was held in Eleanor’s Napa house.”
My blood chilled.
Eleanor owned three houses.
I remembered dinner.
They wanted my condo.
They wanted me in Oakland.
They wanted Eleanor to move in.
Not because she needed a reading chair.
Because they needed a new place to hide women.
I told Detective Stone.
Her face hardened.
Search warrants hit all three houses that night.
At the Napa property, police found a locked garden shed converted into a small room.
At the Marin house, they found medical records.
At the Tahoe cabin, they found Nora.
Alive.
Barely.
Maya’s cousin had been missing for four years.
She had a son with Harold.
A boy named Eli.
Eleanor had placed him with relatives under a fake guardianship.
When Harold heard Nora had been found, he finally stopped denying everything.
Not out of guilt.
May you like
Out of fear.
And fear, I learned, makes cowards useful.
