Chapter 19

Five years after the dinner, Sophie started kindergarten.

Lila invited me to the first-day breakfast.

Sophie wore a purple backpack and yellow shoes.

Eli came too, holding Nora’s hand.

Maya took too many pictures.

Lila cried openly.

Sophie rolled her eyes.

“Mommy, I’m going to school, not the moon.”

Everyone laughed.

Then Sophie ran back and hugged me.

“Claire, if I get scared, can I call Maya’s Line?”

I smiled.

“That line is for emergencies.”

She thought about it.

“What if snack is raisins?”

“That is serious, but not quite.”

She giggled.

Lila watched us with wet eyes.

Later, she said, “You became part of her safe map.”

I loved that.

A safe map.

After school drop-off, I went to the center.

A woman waited in the lobby with a baby and a bruise hidden under makeup.

She whispered, “My husband says his family owns the police.”

I sat beside her.

“They don’t own us.”

Her face crumpled.

That evening, I went home to Miles cooking pasta badly in my kitchen.

I told him about the woman.

He listened.

Then said, “You want me to wash dishes?”

“Yes.”

He rolled up his sleeves.

May you like

Such a simple thing.

Such a miracle.
