My husband’s family spent dinner deciding what they would do with my condo.

Eleanor sat at the head of my dining table in San Francisco, wearing pearls and entitlement, while her husband Harold pointed around my living room like he was touring property he had already bought.
“The piano can go,” he said. “Eleanor needs space for her reading chair.”
I set my fork down.
“My piano belonged to my grandmother.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Then put it in storage, Claire. Family requires sacrifice.”
Adrian’s brother laughed.
Someone suggested my office could become Eleanor’s dressing room.
Then Harold cleared his throat.
“You and Adrian can rent a small place in Oakland. Nothing fancy. And you’ll wire Eleanor twenty-eight hundred a month for living expenses.”
Eleanor owned three houses.
I paid for this condo.
Every wall.
Every window.
Every dish on that table.
“No,” I said.
The room went quiet.
Adrian’s face changed.
“Don’t embarrass me.”
“I said no.”
He slammed both hands on the table.
Before I could move, he grabbed a heavy porcelain plate and smashed it against the side of my head.
Pain exploded.
The plate shattered.
Blood and ceramic scattered across the white tablecloth.
Twenty relatives froze.
No one helped.
Eleanor whispered, “You provoked him.”
Someone said, “Don’t ruin the family over an accident.”
I pulled broken porcelain from my hair, picked up my phone, and dialed.
“My husband just attacked me with a ceramic plate,” I said. “There are twenty witnesses.”
Panic erupted.
Eleanor lunged for my phone.
Adrian stepped toward me.
Then Maya, his sister-in-law, knocked over her chair and stood between us.
Sirens screamed up the driveway.
