Chapter 14

Gavin’s final opportunity for accountability came nearly ten months after the garage.

His financial case was approaching settlement.

The divorce was nearly final.

Supervised contact with Mila had begun after professional evaluation.

His relationship with infant Julian existed mostly through brief supervised visits because Julian barely knew him.

Gavin requested a structured meeting with Sienna.

She agreed once.

He arrived without Marjorie.

That mattered.

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside were written disclosures of every use he had made of Sienna’s power of attorney.

Not only the ones investigators already found.

Two minor matters had been missed.

Neither caused financial loss.

He disclosed them anyway.

“I don’t want you finding another one in five years.”

Sienna read the pages.

“Why now?”

“Because every time I left something out, I told myself I was protecting the future version of us.”

He looked at her.

“There is no us now.”

“No.”

“So I’m done managing what you know.”

That was the first sentence from him that sounded genuinely different.

Sienna did not reward it.

He continued.

“I told myself the power of attorney meant you trusted me.”

“You used it when you knew I wouldn’t agree.”

“I know.”

“That means you understood the difference.”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I just decided my reason mattered more.”

Sienna nodded.

That was finally accurate.

Then Gavin addressed the garage.

“I shoved you because I thought if you got upstairs without the phone, I could still stop the refinance from becoming a fight.”

Sienna stared.

“You were still thinking about the closing.”

“Yes.”

“While I was in labor.”

“Yes.”

“While Mila watched.”

“Yes.”

He did not say panic.

He did not say stress.

He did not say his mother pressured him.

That mattered.

Marjorie had requested a separate reconciliation meeting.

Sienna refused.

Marjorie sent a written apology through counsel.

Sienna returned no response.

There would be no open thread there.

Her boundary was settled.

Marjorie had no access to Sienna’s finances and no unsupervised access to the children.

Whatever relationship the children might have with her in adulthood would not be managed now.

The divorce judgment required Gavin to make restitution for losses and legal costs tied to the unauthorized transaction attempts.

Southline remained Sienna’s.

The warehouse was never pledged.

The old power of attorney was permanently revoked.

Gavin signed an acknowledgment that he held no continuing authority over Sienna’s property.

Ordinary paperwork.

The same medium he had used to take control became the medium that formally ended it.
