Chapter 12

The Milwaukee project collapsed into restructuring.
Not bankruptcy overnight.
Not some dramatic seizure.
A controlled failure.
The lender appointed a restructuring officer.
Several unfinished units were sold to another developer.
Contractors negotiated claims.
Some employees lost jobs.
Others stayed under the new ownership.
Marjorie lost most of her investment.
Her second property was exposed under a personal guarantee and eventually sold.
She blamed Sienna at first.
That ended during deposition.
Rebecca asked:
“Who chose to invest $2.3 million?”
“I did.”
“Who chose to support the Southline plan?”
“I did.”
“Who chose to ask whether Sienna needed to be notified?”
Marjorie hesitated.
“I did.”
“Did Sienna cause the Milwaukee project to exceed its construction budget?”
“No.”
“Did she sign the personal guarantee?”
“No.”
“Did she authorize use of Southline?”
“No.”
Rebecca stopped there.
Sometimes accountability required nothing more complicated than preventing someone from moving their choices onto another person.
Gavin faced civil liability for misuse of fiduciary authority and financial claims connected to his use of the power of attorney.
The garage assault created separate consequences.
Mila’s recording was evidence, but not the entire case.
There were security cameras showing the shove.
Bodyguards arrived moments later.
Sienna’s medical records documented labor beginning immediately around the incident.
Southline records independently established the transaction.
Emails and bank files established intent.
The case did not depend on a child carrying the burden.
Sienna insisted on that.
Mila met with a therapist.
At first she worried she had “gotten Daddy in trouble.”
Sienna corrected her every time.
“Daddy made choices.”
“But I recorded.”
“You showed us what happened.”
“Would he be okay if I didn’t?”
Sienna looked at her daughter.
“That was never your job.”
Mila held the old phone.
Eventually she asked if she had to keep it.
“No.”
She handed it to Rebecca.
“I don’t want it.”
The phone went into evidence storage.
Mila bought herself a purple case for a newer phone months later.
No secret recording app.

No instructions to watch adults.
A child again.
