Chapter 9

Caleb Wade Mercer surrendered in the parking lot of a closed church.
No weapon.
Hands raised.
Three police teams surrounded him.
Daniel watched the arrest through a live video feed from Detective Moreno’s office.
Wade looked older than the photographs.
Gray hair.
Deep lines around his mouth.
Calm eyes.
Too calm.
A man carrying four years of murder did not look afraid.
That disturbed Daniel more than rage would have.
Wade was transported to headquarters.
He refused to speak until Daniel arrived.
Moreno advised against it.
Daniel insisted.
“I want to hear him.”
“You don’t owe him that.”
“No.”
Daniel looked through the glass where Lily sat with Margaret.
“But I owe Sarah.”
They arranged the interview with Daniel sitting behind protective glass in an adjoining room.
Wade knew he was watching.
He stared directly toward the mirror.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Daniel’s stomach turned.
Moreno sat across from Wade.
“You asked to speak.”
“To Daniel.”
“He can hear you.”
Wade smiled.
“Good.”
Moreno placed a recorder on the table.
“Start.”
Wade leaned back.
“Richard Carter hired me to frighten Sarah.”
Daniel clenched his fists.
“The recording says accident.”
“I know.”
“So you killed her.”
Wade looked toward the mirror.
“I caused the crash.”
Daniel’s vision narrowed.
A confession.
Simple.
Cold.
Wade continued.
“I followed her that night. Forced her vehicle toward the shoulder.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
Moreno, watching through another monitor, signaled him to stay calm.
Wade continued.
“The road was wet. She lost control.”
Daniel pressed both hands against the table.
He imagined Sarah.
Alone.
Terrified.
Trying to escape.
“Did she suffer?” Daniel whispered.
Moreno heard him through the microphone but did not repeat it.
Wade seemed to know what Daniel wanted anyway.
“She died quickly.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He hated the man for answering.
Hated himself for needing to know.
Moreno asked.
“Who else was involved?”
“Richard.”
“You said he didn’t act alone.”
Wade smiled faintly.
“He didn’t.”
“Name.”
Wade looked toward the mirror again.
“Margaret Carter.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Behind him, a door opened.
He turned.
His mother stood in the hallway.
She had heard.
Her face went white.
“No.”
Daniel stared at her.
Margaret shook her head.
“He’s lying.”
Wade’s voice continued through the speaker.
“Margaret knew Sarah had evidence. She wanted it contained.”
Daniel turned back to the glass.
Moreno asked.
“What exactly did Margaret do?”
“She gave me Sarah’s schedule.”
Margaret pushed into the observation room.
“No!”
An officer followed.
“Ma’am—”
“He’s lying!”
Daniel stared at her.
“Did you give Dad Sarah’s schedule?”
Margaret froze.
That was not the question Wade had answered.
Daniel saw the mistake immediately.
His mother’s face collapsed.
“Mom.”
“I didn’t know.”
“Did you give Dad her schedule?”
Margaret began crying.
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped back.
Why?
“Richard asked when Sarah would be alone.”
“And you told him?”
“I thought he wanted to confront her privately.”
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
“You knew he was dangerous.”
“I didn’t think he would kill her!”
“But you told him.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
Daniel felt betrayed all over again.
Wade continued.
“Margaret also called me.”
Margaret shook her head violently.
“No.”
Moreno leaned forward.
“When?”
“The afternoon before the crash.”
“What did she say?”
“She told me Sarah had hidden copies somewhere outside the house.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
Margaret stared at the floor.
“Did you call him?”
No answer.
“Mom!”
“Yes!”
The word exploded from her.
Everyone went silent.
Margaret sobbed.
“Richard was threatening Ethan.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“He knew Ethan helped Sarah.”
Daniel tried to process it.
Margaret continued.
“Richard said if the files weren’t returned, Ethan would go to prison for theft. He said he would destroy him.”
“So you called Wade.”
“I told him where Sarah might have hidden the copies.”
Daniel’s voice turned quiet.
“Where?”
“In Lily’s things.”
The room stopped.
Lily.
Sarah had hidden evidence connected to Lily.
Margaret knew.
She told Wade.
Four years later, Wade had entered a hotel room where Lily slept.
Daniel’s face changed.
Margaret rushed forward.
“I did not know he would hurt Sarah!”
“Stay away from me.”
“Daniel—”
“Stay away.”
She stopped.
Daniel looked through the glass.
Wade smiled.
He was enjoying this.
Daniel realized it.
The man wanted the family to destroy itself.
Moreno saw it too.
“You’re blaming Margaret to reduce your responsibility.”
Wade shrugged.
“I’m telling the truth.”
“You took money.”
“Yes.”
“You forced Sarah off the road.”
“Yes.”
“Margaret didn’t.”
“No.”
That mattered.
Margaret had been weak.
Complicit in secrecy.
But Wade had committed the murder.
Richard ordered it.
Daniel would not let Wade blur responsibility just because more people had made terrible choices.
Moreno asked.
“Why surrender now?”
Wade’s smile disappeared.
“Because Nora made copies.”
“Of what?”
“Richard’s archive.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why do you care?”
“Because the archive contains evidence against people who will kill everyone connected to it.”
Moreno leaned forward.
“Names.”
Wade shook his head.
“I want a deal.”
“No.”
“Then you’ll learn when bodies start dropping.”
Daniel watched.
He did not know whether it was truth or another manipulation.
Moreno did not react.
“What happened to Nora?”
“I found her.”
“You assaulted her.”
“She stole from me.”
“You mean the account.”
Wade’s eyes changed slightly.
Confirmation.
Moreno noticed.
“How much money?”
“Enough.”
“Where did it come from?”
“Richard.”
“You were paid to commit crimes for him.”
“I was paid for many things.”
“Including murder.”
Wade said nothing.
Moreno closed his folder.
“We’re done.”
Wade suddenly leaned forward.
“Ask Daniel what Nora changed in the trust.”
Daniel froze.
Moreno stopped.
“What?”
Wade smiled again.
“Nora didn’t need Daniel’s signature.”
Daniel’s pulse accelerated.
“What are you talking about?”
“She forged it.”
Daniel grabbed the microphone.
“What did she forge?”
Wade looked directly at the mirror.
“Your trust amendment.”
Daniel thought of the unsigned documents stolen from his safe.
They were gone.
If Nora forged Daniel’s signature and somehow had the documents notarized—
She might attempt to use them after his death.
But Daniel was alive.
So why would it matter now?
Then he understood.
The documents could also alter Lily’s guardianship arrangements.
“Where are they?”
Wade said nothing.
Moreno asked.
“Where are the forged documents?”
Wade smiled.
“With Nora’s lawyer.”
Daniel immediately called his estate attorney.
Within thirty minutes, the truth emerged.
A document had been submitted electronically that morning.
Purportedly signed by Daniel three days earlier.
It revoked Daniel’s previous estate arrangements.
It named Nora sole trustee of Lily’s inheritance.
Worse—
It gave Nora broad authority over several Carter family holding companies if Daniel became incapacitated.
Daniel stared at the forgery.
“My signature looks perfect.”
Moreno nodded.
“Hidden bedroom camera.”
Daniel understood.
Nora and Ethan had not only been watching the safe.
They had been recording him signing documents.
Studying his hand.
His signature.
His routines.
“Can she use this?”
“Not once we challenge it.”
“But she already submitted it.”
“Yes.”
Daniel felt rage.
Even after failing to kill him, Nora had continued trying to seize control.
Her greed seemed bottomless.
Police obtained a warrant for Nora’s lawyer’s office.
The attorney immediately claimed he believed all documents were legitimate.
Maybe true.
Maybe not.
Investigators recovered the original forged trust.
And a flash drive Nora left in a sealed envelope.
Her backup.
Her insurance.
On it were copies of Richard’s archive.
But not everything.
There were financial records.
Audio files.
Photographs.
And one shocking video.
Ethan and Nora in a hotel room.
Nora had secretly recorded him.
Ethan admitted helping Sarah obtain evidence against Richard.
Then he confessed something else.
“I could have saved her.”
Daniel stopped the video.
He looked at Moreno.
“What does he mean?”
They continued.
Ethan’s recorded voice:
“Sarah called me from the road. She said Wade was behind her. I knew Dad had sent him. I knew what could happen.”
Nora asked:
“Why didn’t you call Daniel?”
Ethan answered:
“Because Dad had proof I stole from the company. I was scared.”
Nora laughed.
“So you let Sarah die to save yourself.”
Ethan looked broken.
“Yes.”
Daniel left the room.
He walked outside.
Cold air hit his face.
He leaned against the wall.
Ethan had not ordered Sarah’s murder.
But he knew she was in danger.
And chose silence.
Again.
Silence.
The Carter family disease.
Margaret’s silence.
Ethan’s silence.
Daniel’s own silence when Lily first complained about Nora.
Different consequences.
Same cowardice.
Daniel looked through the window at Lily.
He made a decision.
This cycle ended with him.
No more protecting family secrets.
No more reputations.
No more excuses.
He returned to Moreno.
“Release everything legally possible.”
Moreno looked up.
“Everything?”
“About my father. The money. Sarah. Ethan. Nora.”
“That will create a media storm.”
“I know.”
“Your company could lose contracts.”
“I know.”
“Your board may remove you.”
Daniel looked at Sarah’s paused image on the screen.
“Then they remove me.”
That afternoon, Daniel held a press conference outside police headquarters.
Reporters shouted questions.
Cameras flashed.
Margaret watched from a distance.
Ethan remained hospitalized under police guard.
Nora was formally charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, child endangerment and fraud.
Wade was charged with Sarah’s murder.
Daniel stepped to the microphone.
“My family spent years protecting a name.”
The crowd became quiet.
“I won’t.”
He explained that evidence implicated his late father in financial crimes and Sarah’s death.
He announced Carter Industries would cooperate fully.
He asked victims of Richard’s schemes to come forward.
His voice shook only once.
When he mentioned Sarah.
“My daughter lost her mother because people who knew the truth stayed silent.”
Daniel looked directly into the cameras.
“I will not make that mistake again.”
The press conference ended.
Daniel thought the worst was behind them.
Then Detective Moreno rushed outside.
“Daniel.”
One look at his face brought the fear back.
“What?”
“It’s Lily.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What happened?”
“She’s gone.”
The world went silent.
Daniel grabbed Moreno’s jacket.
“What do you mean gone?”
“Margaret had her.”
Daniel looked around wildly.
“Where’s my mother?”
May you like
Moreno’s jaw tightened.
“She’s gone too.”
