folio
Daddy, don’t drink it!” / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound in the dining room was the faint hiss coming from the tea spreading across the marble floor.

Daniel stared at it.

Then at Nora.

Then at Lily.

His daughter was shaking so badly that her knees knocked together.

Her torn yellow dress hung from one shoulder.

Daniel’s anger disappeared.

He rushed to her.

“Lily.”

She threw herself into his arms.

“Daddy!”

Daniel lifted her against his chest.

Her tiny fingers locked around his shirt.

Nora backed toward the kitchen.

“This is insane.”

Daniel looked up.

“Don’t move.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“You grabbed my daughter.”

“Because she was having another tantrum!”

Lily buried her face against Daniel’s neck.

“I wasn’t.”

Nora pointed toward her.

“She has hated me since the wedding, Daniel. You know that.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

He had heard that sentence too many times.

Whenever Lily cried, Nora said she was jealous.

Whenever Lily complained, Nora said she was lying.

Whenever Lily asked to sleep beside Daniel after a nightmare, Nora called her manipulative.

Daniel had believed some of it.

That realization suddenly made him sick.

He carried Lily away from the spilled tea.

“Tell me exactly what you saw.”

Lily looked at Nora.

Nora’s eyes narrowed.

It was tiny.

Almost invisible.

But Daniel saw it.

A warning.

Lily saw it too.

She went silent.

Daniel turned.

“Stop looking at her.”

“I’m standing here.”

“Go into the living room.”

Nora laughed nervously.

“You’re giving me orders now?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel—”

“NOW.”

Nora flinched.

Then she folded her arms.

“I’m not going anywhere until you listen to me.”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

Nora’s expression changed.

“Who are you calling?”

“The police.”

Her confidence vanished.

“Daniel.”

He dialed.

Nora rushed forward.

He stepped between her and Lily.

“Touch me and I swear—”

“Put the phone down!”

Daniel’s voice became ice cold.

“Why?”

“Because this is our family!”

“My daughter just stopped me from drinking something that is eating the finish off my floor.”

Nora looked down.

A pale stain had appeared in the marble sealant.

She swallowed.

Daniel saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

He told the dispatcher what happened.

Nora began pacing.

“This is unbelievable.”

Daniel ignored her.

After the call, he crouched in front of Lily.

“Sweetheart, look at me.”

Her cheeks were wet.

“Am I in trouble?”

His heart broke.

“No.”

“But Nora said if I told you—”

Nora spun around.

“Lily!”

Daniel stood so fast the chair behind him toppled.

“What did she say?”

Lily started crying harder.

Daniel covered one of her ears against his chest and stared at Nora.

“Don’t say another word to her.”

Nora’s lips trembled.

“She’s making this up.”

Daniel looked down at Lily again.

“What did Nora tell you?”

Lily hesitated.

“She said you wouldn’t believe me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The words hit harder than the slap he had given Nora.

Because six months earlier, Lily had told him Nora locked her in the laundry room.

Nora said Lily had accidentally locked herself in.

Daniel believed Nora.

Three months earlier, Lily said Nora threw away a photograph of her mother.

Nora said the frame broke.

Daniel believed Nora.

Two weeks earlier, Lily said Nora told her she would someday be sent to boarding school.

Daniel told Lily not to exaggerate.

He had believed Nora.

Again.

“Daddy?”

Daniel opened his eyes.

“I believe you now.”

Lily’s face crumpled.

“That’s why I had to stop you.”

Daniel gently wiped her tears.

“What did you see?”

“This morning I wanted my rabbit.”

She pointed toward the hallway.

“I left him near the kitchen.”

Nora’s breathing changed.

Lily continued.

“I came downstairs.”

“And?”

“Nora was making your tea.”

Daniel nodded.

That was normal.

Nora made tea for him almost every afternoon.

“She opened the cabinet under the sink.”

Daniel slowly looked toward the kitchen.

Cleaning chemicals were stored there.

“What did she take?”

“A bottle.”

“What color?”

“White.”

Nora burst out laughing.

“There are six white bottles under there!”

Lily jumped.

Daniel snapped.

“Shut up!”

Nora went silent.

Daniel turned back.

“What did she do with it?”

Lily whispered.

“She put some in the little honey jar.”

Daniel froze.

“The honey?”

Lily nodded.

“She mixed it.”

Nora shook her head.

“No.”

“And then she called somebody.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did she say?”

Lily squeezed her eyes shut, trying to remember.

“She said…”

Nora moved.

Daniel immediately stood.

“Stay where you are.”

Nora stopped.

Lily opened her eyes.

“She said, ‘He’ll drink it before four.’”

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

Nora shook her head faster.

“She is six years old!”

Lily continued.

“And then Nora said, ‘After tonight, everything is ours.’”

Silence.

Daniel stared at his wife.

Nora stared back.

Neither blinked.

Then Daniel heard sirens.

Nora did too.

Her face changed.

She ran.

Not toward the front door.

Toward Daniel’s office.

“Nora!”

Daniel put Lily behind him and chased her.

Nora slammed the office door.

Daniel hit it with his shoulder.

Locked.

“NORA!”

Inside, drawers opened.

Something crashed.

Daniel’s pulse exploded.

He knew exactly what was in that office.

His financial documents.

Company records.

His father’s trust.

And the new will he was supposed to sign the next morning.

Daniel hit the door again.

“Nora, open it!”

No answer.

He backed up.

Then drove his shoulder into the wood.

CRACK!

The frame split.

Daniel forced his way inside.

Nora stood beside the desk.

A stack of papers burned inside the metal wastebasket.

Daniel lunged.

“What are you doing?”

He kicked the basket over and stomped out the flames.

Nora tried to grab a half-burned envelope.

Daniel caught her wrist.

She screamed.

“Let go of me!”

Two police officers appeared at the doorway.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Daniel released her.

Nora instantly pointed at him.

“He attacked me!”

Daniel stepped back.

“She was burning documents.”

One officer separated them.

The other looked toward the smoking papers.

Lily appeared in the hallway.

“Daddy?”

Daniel immediately went to her.

An officer crouched beside the little girl.

“Is that your daughter?”

“Yes.”

The officer noticed Lily’s ripped dress.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at Nora.

“She tried to stop Lily from warning me.”

Nora screamed.

“That is not what happened!”

The officers photographed everything.

The tea.

The cup.

The stained floor.

The honey jar.

The cleaning cabinet.

One officer sealed the white bottles into evidence bags.

The second questioned Lily with Daniel nearby.

Lily repeated the same story.

Every detail.

No hesitation.

No contradiction.

Nora sat on the sofa with her arms crossed.

Then one officer asked Daniel something strange.

“Sir, does anyone else have access to this house?”

“My mother. My brother. The housekeeper.”

“Anyone been here today?”

Daniel thought.

“No.”

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Uncle Ethan was.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit.

“He came before lunch.”

Daniel stared at her.

His younger brother had told him he was in Chicago.

“What did Uncle Ethan do?”

“He talked to Nora.”

Nora stood.

“She’s confused!”

The officer ordered her to sit.

Daniel’s skin went cold.

“Where?”

“In Daddy’s office.”

“What did they say?”

Lily shook her head.

“I couldn’t hear.”

Daniel looked toward the burned papers.

His mind began connecting things he did not want connected.

Ethan had been furious when Daniel removed him from the company’s financial division.

Ethan had begged for another chance.

Daniel refused.

Tomorrow morning Daniel was signing a revised trust.

If Daniel died tonight—

Lily inherited his shares.

But because she was a child, her legal guardian would control them.

And Daniel had recently signed temporary guardianship paperwork naming Nora.

His wife.

The room suddenly seemed too small.

An officer approached Nora.

“Ma’am, stand up.”

Her confidence finally cracked.

“Why?”

“We need you to come with us.”

“You can’t arrest me because a child made up a story!”

“We’re detaining you while we investigate a suspected poisoning.”

Nora looked at Daniel.

“Do something.”

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time since marrying her, he felt like he was looking at a stranger.

“Tell them where Ethan is.”

Nora’s eyes flashed.

“I don’t know.”

“You spoke to him today.”

“No, I didn’t.”

Lily whispered.

“Yes, you did.”

Nora looked at her.

The hatred in her eyes lasted only a second.

But Daniel saw it.

So did the officer.

They handcuffed Nora.

As they led her toward the door, she twisted around.

“Daniel, you’re destroying this family!”

Daniel pulled Lily closer.

“No.”

His voice shook.

“I think I finally figured out who was destroying it.”

Nora was taken outside.

The officers followed.

Daniel stood in the ruined dining room with Lily in his arms.

He thought it was over.

Then Lily tugged his collar.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“There’s something else.”

Daniel looked at her.

She glanced toward the staircase.

Her voice became a whisper.

“Uncle Ethan told Nora he moved the camera.”

“What camera?”

Lily pointed upstairs.

May you like

“The one they put in your bedroom.”

Daniel stopped breathing.
