Daddy, don’t drink it!” / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8

Daniel returned to Lily before sunrise.

The stuffed rabbit sat inside a clear evidence bag.

Its stomach had been cut open.

Lily cried when she saw it.

Daniel wanted to hide the damage.

Too late.

“Rabbit!”

He knelt beside her.

“We can fix him.”

“Somebody hurt him.”

“I know.”

Lily touched the plastic bag.

“Did they find Mommy’s card?”

Detective Moreno stood nearby.

“No memory card was inside.”

Lily looked confused.

“But I put it there.”

Daniel crouched.

“Exactly where?”

“In his tummy.”

“How?”

“There’s a little zipper.”

Daniel knew the zipper.

Sarah had sewn a tiny compartment inside the rabbit to hold a music box mechanism.

Lily apparently discovered it.

“Did you put the card in by itself?”

She thought.

Then shook her head.

“In the blue thing.”

“What blue thing?”

“My princess case.”

Daniel frowned.

“What princess case?”

“For my camera card.”

Then he remembered.

Lily owned a small digital camera.

It came with a blue plastic SD-card holder decorated with princess stickers.

“Where did you get the card from?”

“Mommy’s box.”

“And then?”

“I put it in the blue case.”

“And then put the case inside Rabbit?”

“Yes.”

Moreno opened a photograph from the hotel room.

The rabbit had been lying on the bed before it disappeared.

“Could the case have fallen out?”

Lily shook her head fiercely.

“No.”

Then she stopped.

Her eyes widened.

“Wait.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What?”

“I changed it.”

“When?”

“When Nora came upstairs.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“What did you change?”

“I put Mommy’s card in my camera.”

Daniel stared.

“Your camera?”

Lily nodded.

“And I put one of my cards in Rabbit because Nora was looking.”

Moreno and Daniel exchanged a stunned look.

The card Wade stole was not Sarah’s.

It was one of Lily’s memory cards.

Full of children’s photographs.

Sarah’s real card was inside Lily’s camera.

“Where’s the camera?”

Lily looked toward her backpack.

Daniel grabbed it.

He dumped the contents carefully onto the table.

Coloring books.

Crayons.

Socks.

A hairbrush.

Pink plastic camera.

Daniel’s hands shook as he opened the battery compartment.

Memory card.

Still inside.

For four years, people had lied.

Hidden evidence.

Burned papers.

Threatened children.

Tried to kill Daniel.

And the truth had been sitting inside a six-year-old’s toy camera.

Moreno took the card.

“We’ll copy it immediately.”

Daniel watched it leave.

He felt like a piece of Sarah was leaving with it.

Lily hugged the damaged rabbit.

“Can I keep him?”

“After police finish with him.”

“Can Grandma fix him?”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“She probably can.”

Forensic technicians copied the card onto three separate drives.

Then Moreno returned.

His expression told Daniel everything.

“There’s a video.”

Daniel stood.

“Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“Show me.”

Moreno hesitated.

“It may be difficult.”

“Show me.”

They went into a private room.

Lily remained with the female detective.

Moreno opened the file.

The video was shaky.

Dark.

Sarah had apparently hidden her phone or camera inside a bag.

Richard’s voice came first.

“You were supposed to scare her.”

Then Wade.

“She keeps copies.”

Richard again.

“Then recover them.”

“And if she won’t give them up?”

A pause.

Richard’s answer.

“Make sure she stops being a problem.”

Daniel’s body went numb.

Wade asked:

“You want an accident?”

Richard said nothing for several seconds.

Then:

“No witnesses. No scandal. Daniel can never know.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

Wade mentioned a road.

The same road where Sarah died.

Richard asked whether rain was expected.

Wade said yes.

Then Sarah’s breathing.

Quiet.

Terrified.

The video ended.

Daniel stared at the black screen.

His father ordered his wife’s murder.

The man Daniel worshiped.

The man whose approval he chased his entire life.

The man whose name was engraved on buildings.

Richard Carter had murdered Sarah because she threatened his money and reputation.

Daniel cried silently.

Moreno gave him time.

After several minutes Daniel whispered.

“Arrest Wade.”

“We will.”

“And Nora.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan?”

Moreno looked at him.

“Ethan faces serious charges.”

Daniel nodded.

He did not defend him.

For once, family loyalty would not erase consequences.

“What about my father?”

“He’s dead.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“But I want the truth made public.”

“That decision may expose your company to investigations.”

“Good.”

“Shareholders could sue.”

“Good.”

“Your family foundation could collapse.”

Daniel looked at Moreno.

“Good.”

His father had built an empire using fear.

Daniel would not protect it.

Moreno’s phone buzzed.

“Excuse me.”

He read the message.

“We found Nora.”

Daniel stood quickly.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Emergency room.”

“What happened?”

“She walked into a gas station twenty miles outside the city. Bruised, dehydrated.”

“And Wade?”

“Gone.”

Daniel did not feel relief for Nora.

But he felt something.

Maybe because she was still a human being.

Maybe because Lily did not need another death attached to this nightmare.

“Did she talk?”

“She asked for immunity.”

Daniel laughed coldly.

“Of course.”

“She says she can lead us to Wade.”

“Then let her.”

Moreno studied him.

“You know immunity could reduce her punishment.”

“She tried to murder me.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked toward Lily through the window.

“I want Wade more.”

Nora’s interview took place at the hospital.

Daniel did not attend.

But Moreno returned with the basics.

Wade had found Nora at a motel.

He demanded Sarah’s card.

Nora did not have it.

He beat her and drove her toward the old Carter warehouse district.

Nora escaped when he stopped for fuel.

She said Wade had been staying at an abandoned warehouse once owned by Richard.

Police prepared a raid.

Again Daniel was told to stay away.

This time he did.

He sat beside Lily repairing Rabbit.

Margaret arrived with a sewing kit.

Lily ran into her arms.

“Grandma!”

Margaret cried.

She hugged Lily so tightly that Daniel almost told her to loosen her grip.

Instead he watched.

Margaret kissed Lily’s hair.

“You saved your daddy.”

Lily nodded seriously.

“I pushed the table.”

Margaret laughed through tears.

“Yes, you did.”

They repaired the rabbit together.

Daniel sat across the room.

His mother eventually looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel stared.

“For which part?”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“All of it.”

He wanted to forgive her.

He also wanted to scream.

Both feelings existed at once.

“You knew Dad was dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“You stayed.”

“Yes.”

“You hid Sarah’s voicemail.”

Margaret began crying.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was ashamed.”

“That doesn’t explain it.”

“No.”

She wiped her face.

“I thought if you heard Sarah’s voice, you would destroy yourself trying to prove Richard did something. You were already barely surviving.”

“So you decided for me.”

“Yes.”

“That’s what Dad always did.”

Margaret flinched.

Daniel instantly regretted the cruelty.

But he did not take it back.

She nodded.

“You’re right.”

That answer disarmed him.

Margaret looked at Lily.

“I spent my whole marriage surviving by staying quiet. Eventually I forgot silence can hurt people too.”

Daniel said nothing.

She looked back.

“I cannot change what I did. But I will testify. I’ll give police everything.”

Daniel nodded once.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

At noon, Moreno called.

The warehouse was empty.

Wade had escaped again.

But police found computers.

Cash.

Weapons.

Passports.

And Nora’s phone backup.

On one computer was a video.

The “insurance” Nora had told Ethan about.

Daniel watched it with Moreno.

Nora appeared on screen.

Recorded one month earlier.

“If you’re watching this, something has gone wrong.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Nora continued.

“Ethan thinks he is controlling me. He isn’t.”

Daniel stared.

“I know what Richard Carter did to Sarah. I know what Ethan helped hide. And I know Daniel will change his trust.”

She smiled at the camera.

“So I made arrangements.”

Daniel felt cold.

“If Daniel dies, police will look at Ethan.”

Moreno paused the video.

Daniel stared.

“She planned to frame him.”

“Yes.”

The video resumed.

“I kept copies of Ethan’s messages and altered several documents. By the time anyone understands what happened, Lily will be under my guardianship and Daniel’s estate will be mine to control.”

Daniel felt physically ill.

Nora had planned everything.

Even Ethan was disposable.

Then the last line.

“If Ethan gets nervous, Wade knows what to do.”

Daniel looked at Moreno.

“Nora hired Wade too?”

“Looks that way.”

The conspiracy was not one straight line.

It was a nest of betrayals.

Richard hired Wade to kill Sarah.

Years later Ethan sought Wade to locate Richard’s hidden evidence.

Nora used Ethan.

Then Nora secretly contacted Wade.

Wade used all of them.

Everyone thought they were controlling someone else.

Moreno’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face tightened.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked directly at Daniel.

“Wade just called 911.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

“He says he wants to surrender.”

Daniel did not believe it for a second.

“What does he want?”

Moreno’s expression hardened.

“To speak with you.”

“Why?”

“He says he has one final piece of evidence.”

Daniel felt the old fear returning.

“What evidence?”

May you like

Moreno slowly lowered the phone.

“He says your father didn’t act alone.”
