Chapter 9 - The Stranger at the Door

The kitchen went dead silent. Two line cooks froze with their spatulas hovering over the flattop grill, and David stepped out from the pantry with wide, disbelieving eyes, ready to intercept the intruder.
Elena raised a single hand, signaling David to stay back. She slowly untied her side towel, laid it flat on the counter, and walked toward the pass until she was standing just inches away from the man she had called her husband for three years.
"You have some nerve showing your face in this kitchen, Mark," Elena said, her voice frighteningly calm.
"Elena, I made mistakes, I know I did!" Mark sobbed, taking a desperate step closer, ignoring the stares of the kitchen staff. "Mom pushed me into those investments, she told me the corporate accounts were just family loans—it wasn't my fault! If you sign the bail bond release using Aura’s credit line, we can fix this. We can leave Austin, go down to Corpus Christi, start over—"
"Start over with what money, Mark?" Elena interrupted, her amber eyes locking onto his with a searing, merciless clarity. "The money you stole from my labor? The shell companies you registered behind my back while your mother was sitting in my dining room mocking my clothes?"
Mark’s face twisted in sudden desperation, the pathetic mask slipping to reveal the ugly entitlement underneath. "I am your husband! By law, half of everything this restaurant makes belongs to me!"
"Not anymore," a crisp, authoritative voice echoed from the front dining room.
Everyone turned. Stepping through the swinging doors from the dining room was a tall, sharp-looking woman in a charcoal pantsuit carrying a heavy leather briefcase—attorney Sarah Chen, whom Elena had retained two hours prior.
Attorney Chen walked right past Mark, stopping beside Elena and sliding a crisp, multi-page legal document across the stainless-steel pass.
"Mr. Miller," Attorney Chen said, her voice dropping into a professional chill. "As of 4:45 PM today, your wife filed an emergency expedited divorce petition coupled with a forensic audit waiver. Because you utilized fraudulent corporate signatures and diverted marital assets to third-party paramours, a judge has already granted an emergency restraining order freezing any claim you or your family might have to Aura or its subsidiaries."
Mark stared at the paper as if it were a physical blow. He swayed on his feet, his mouth working silently. "No... no, she can't do that..."
"I didn't just do it, Mark," Elena said softly, leaning over the counter so her words cut straight to his marrow. "I watched your mother get hauled away in handcuffs today for trying to steal my livelihood. And looking at you right now, I realize you're just a smaller, weaker copy of her."
Before Mark could lunge forward or scream, the front glass doors of Aura burst open again.

Two burly men in plainclothes—federal marshals carrying clipboard notices—strode directly into the dining room, their heavy boots echoing against the floorboards as they headed straight toward the kitchen entrance.
