Chapter 5 - The Police at the Door

Before Theresa could answer, the brass bell above the front entrance chimed again—this time with a sharp, official resonance.
Two uniformed Austin Police officers stepped through the doorway, their heavy boots clicking against the polished concrete floor as they scanned the dining room. Leading them was Detective Ramirez, a weathered investigator with a binder tucked under his arm.
The thirty-eight socialites shrank back into their chairs, desperately trying to make themselves invisible as the police marched past the hostess stand directly toward the private salon.
Detective Ramirez stopped at the head of the table, his eyes passing over Theresa’s pale, trembling face before locking onto Michael Vance.
“Mr. Vance,” Detective Ramirez nodded formally. “I see you found her.”
“Officer, there’s been a terrible misunderstanding,” Theresa babbled, her aristocratic composure completely shattered as she clutched at her husband’s sleeve. “We were just having a family lunch! We didn't steal anything—this girl is just trying to ruin our reputation!”
“Mrs. Miller, nobody said anything about lunch,” Detective Ramirez replied smoothly, pulling a crisp, folded warrant from his binder. He unfolded it and held it out. “We have an active bench warrant issued by Judge Hernandez for the immediate arrest of Theresa Miller on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement.”
The gasp that went through the table of thirty-eight women sounded like a collective intake of autumn wind.
Michael didn't move to stop the officer. He simply closed his eyes and let out a long, defeated sigh, realizing that the house of cards his family had built on theft and arrogance had finally collapsed.
Officer Ramirez stepped forward, gently taking Theresa by the arm. The sharp click of steel handcuffs echoed loudly through the high-end dining room.
“You have the right to remain silent,” the officer recited in a steady monotone as he guided a sobbing, bewildered Theresa away from the table she had expected to dominate.
Elena stood by the pass, watching them walk toward the exit. She didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply picked up the unpaid bill from the table, folded it neatly, and slipped it into her apron pocket.

As the glass doors swung shut behind Theresa and the police, Detective Ramirez paused by Elena’s side, touching the brim of his cap.
“Oh, and Mrs. Vance—or whatever your legal name is going to be tomorrow,” the detective said quietly, flashing a brief, sympathetic look. “You might want to check your back dock. There’s a moving truck outside waiting to repossess three luxury sports cars registered under your husband’s shell company that are currently parked in your restaurant’s delivery bay.”
