Chapter 4 - The Husband’s Arrival

Theresa turned toward her husband, her expression shifting instantly from rage to desperate victimization. “Michael! Thank goodness you’re here! This unhinged girl has completely lost her mind! She’s holding us hostage over a restaurant tab, and Mark is—”

“Mark is currently sitting in a holding cell at the downtown precinct,” Michael interrupted, his voice dropping into a flat, lethal monotone that made Theresa stagger backward a half-step.

The restaurant seemed to hold its breath.

“What... what did you say?” Theresa whispered, color draining completely from her face.

“You heard me,” Michael said, walking slowly toward the table, ignoring the stares of the thirty-eight society women. He opened his briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of certified bank documents, and slammed them down onto the table right beside the unpaid bill. “The federal bank fraud investigators executed a search warrant on Mark’s logistics firm this morning. He didn't just drain his personal accounts; he used forged corporate signatures on Aura’s ledger to funnel over four hundred thousand dollars into offshore shell accounts to fund his lifestyle and his mistress.”

Michael turned his gaze slowly from his wife to Elena. His eyes were heavy with a mixture of shame and professional exhaustion.

“And according to these preliminary filings, Elena,” Michael continued quietly, “every single dollar of that stolen capital passed through trust accounts managed jointly by my wife and son. Which means legally... Theresa is a co-conspirator in grand larceny.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

One of the society women dropped her linen napkin; it hit the floor with a soft slap.

Theresa stared at the documents on the table, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly. The grand matriarch of high society, invincible just ten minutes before, looked like she had just been struck by lightning.

“No,” Theresa breathed, shaking her head in frantic denial. “No, that’s impossible. Mark said... Mark said it was just standard business leverage...”

“Mark lied to you because he’s a coward, Theresa,” Elena said softly, stepping closer to the table and picking up the master folio with the twenty-five-thousand-dollar bill. She slid it neatly on top of Michael’s stack of federal bank fraud documents. “Now, are you going to put this lunch on your credit card, or should I have the police officers outside add grand theft of services to your husband’s file?”
