Chapter 9

Sofia controlled the master security network.

She sealed the resort with more than four hundred guests inside.

Then she disabled the fire-control system.

Elena called her.

Sofia answered from Augustus’s penthouse.

“Open the doors.”

“Not until every Somor resigns from the trust.”

“You are a Somor.”

“No. I am the employee your grandfather never acknowledged.”

Sofia’s mother had worked as Augustus’s private nurse.

When she became pregnant, he paid her to leave.

Unlike Vanessa’s mother, she never used the secret for power.

She raised Sofia alone and died believing Augustus would someday recognize their daughter.

He never did.

Sofia entered the company under a different surname and worked her way into compliance.

She discovered the stolen funds, Stefan’s death, and Vanessa’s identity.

“Did you kidnap yourself?” Elena asked.

“Daniel caught me taking the memory card. Adrian tied me in the lodge. But I already knew where they would take me.”

“You let us rescue you.”

“I needed access to Morgan’s investigation.”

“Why lock innocent guests inside?”

“Because your family only responds when its reputation is threatened.”

“Children are inside this building.”

Sofia went silent.

Elena heard uncertainty.

“You spent years exposing people who treated human lives like leverage. Do not become one of them.”

“I won’t hurt anyone.”

“You disabled the fire system.”

“I needed control.”

“That is what Celeste said. Daniel said it too.”

The penthouse camera switched on.

Sofia stood beside the balcony where Stefan had fallen.

She held the original trust amendment.

Augustus sat in a wheelchair nearby.

She had removed him from the hospital with help from a nurse.

“My father will confess publicly,” she said. “Then I release the building.”

Augustus looked toward the camera.

“Do not give her control.”

Sofia struck the wheelchair.

Elena’s voice hardened.

“Do not touch him.”

“You still protect him after everything?”

“I am protecting you from becoming his victim twice.”

Sofia’s face twisted.

“I am not a victim.”

“Then open the doors and let the guests leave.”

The fire alarm began ringing.

Smoke appeared on the penthouse feed.

Sofia stared toward the hallway.

“I did not start that.”

Someone else was inside the resort.

Daniel had escaped federal medical custody by switching identification bands with another prisoner.

He entered through an old kitchen tunnel.

Now he had set fire to the records room and was climbing toward the penthouse.

Elena unlocked a maintenance staircase using Augustus’s gold badge.

She raced upward with Morgan.

Smoke filled the upper floors.

Staff members led guests out through emergency passages that Sofia had overlooked.

When Elena reached the penthouse, Daniel was dragging Augustus toward the balcony.

Sofia lay unconscious near the fireplace.

The amendment burned inside a metal bowl.

Elena grabbed it before the flames reached Augustus’s signature.

Daniel aimed his gun.

“You should have died in the ravine.”

“You should have accepted what Grandfather gave you.”

“He gave me a title. He gave you the future.”

Augustus suddenly pushed backward.

His wheelchair struck Daniel’s legs.

Morgan entered with her weapon raised.

Daniel fired at Elena.

Sofia woke and threw herself between them.

The bullet struck her side.

Morgan shot Daniel in the shoulder and forced him down.

Elena pressed both hands over Sofia’s wound.

“Stay with me.”

Sofia struggled to breathe.

“I wanted him to say I was his daughter.”

Augustus reached for her.

“You are.”

She turned her face away.

“Too late.”

Paramedics carried her downstairs.

Firefighters contained the blaze.

Every guest escaped safely.

Sofia survived emergency surgery.

The original amendment was badly burned, but enough remained to prove its terms.

Then Morgan recovered Daniel’s phone.

It contained a final message sent minutes before his escape.

COME TO THE RESORT. FINISH ELENA.

The sender was Celeste.

May you like

Elena’s mother had escaped from federal detention.

And she was still inside the building.
