Chapter 8

Vanessa learned about the amendment from her hospital bed.

She laughed until the movement hurt her injured shoulder.

“After everything, the resort is mine.”

“Not yet,” Morgan said.

The same misconduct clause applied to her.

If a court proved she had helped imprison or kill Elena, she would lose her shares.

Vanessa’s victory disappeared as quickly as it came.

She offered to testify against Daniel, Celeste, and Adrian.

In exchange, she wanted immunity.

Elena refused to support it.

“You do not become innocent because Daniel betrayed you.”

“I saved your life at the cemetery.”

“You saved the document because you wanted the trust.”

Vanessa’s eyes became cold.

“You are no better than Augustus.”

“Maybe not. But I am finished protecting relatives from consequences.”

The trials would take months.

Meanwhile, Judge Hale ruled that the resort needed an independent administrator.

He appointed his own son.

Before the order took effect, Morgan arrested the judge using Sofia’s recording.

Dr. Miriam Cole was arrested for falsifying Elena’s psychiatric diagnosis.

Within a week, nearly every senior Somor executive had either been charged or suspended.

Thousands of employees feared losing their jobs.

Guests canceled reservations.

Banks threatened to freeze credit.

The family empire began collapsing under the weight of its own secrets.

Elena returned to the resort lobby where Vanessa had slapped her.

Employees waited in silence.

Some had served the Somor family for decades.

Others had been hired days earlier.

“My relatives treated this company like a weapon,” Elena said. “You paid the price for decisions you did not make.”

She announced an emergency worker-controlled board.

Profits would protect salaries before trustee payments.

Independent investigators would review every contract.

No family member would hold unchecked authority again.

For the first time since Elena returned, the employees applauded.

That evening, Sofia brought her a sealed envelope found in Augustus’s private vault.

It contained DNA results.

Vanessa was not Stefan’s daughter.

Her mother had lied about her parentage.

The monthly payments from Augustus were not child support for Stefan’s secret family.

They were blackmail payments.

Vanessa’s real father was Augustus.

That made her Elena’s aunt.

It also gave her a different claim to the trust.

“Does she know?” Sofia asked.

“I don’t think so.”

Elena visited Augustus in a secure hospital room.

He looked at the report and closed his eyes.

“I loved Vanessa’s mother.”

“Did Stefan know?”

“Yes.”

“Is that why he returned?”

“He discovered she was blackmailing me. He believed the payments came from the trust.”

“They did.”

“I intended to repay everything.”

Every guilty person believed future repayment erased present theft.

“Did Celeste know Vanessa was your daughter?”

“Yes.”

That explained her hatred.

Celeste had protected Augustus’s secret while watching Vanessa enter the family as Daniel’s wife.

“Why let Daniel marry her?”

“I tried to stop it without revealing why.”

“You could have told the truth.”

“The truth would have destroyed us.”

Elena looked around the guarded hospital room.

“It did anyway.”

She brought the DNA results to Morgan.

Vanessa received the news in custody.

Her face became empty.

“My whole life was manufactured.”

“Your mother lied about your father,” Elena said. “That does not excuse what you did to me.”

“What happens to my shares?”

“The court will decide.”

Vanessa pressed both hands against the glass.

Then she whispered something that made Elena’s blood run cold.

“Augustus has another child.”

“Who?”

“He never knew. But my mother did.”

Vanessa identified Sofia Lane.

Sofia was not merely the compliance director.

She was Augustus’s youngest daughter.

And the woman Elena had trusted with every piece of evidence had quietly positioned herself beside the trust’s control system.

When Elena returned to the resort, Sofia was gone.

So was the original amendment.

Every account had been locked.

A message filled the lobby screens.

THE SOMOR FAMILY ENDS TONIGHT.
