Chapter 6 - THE STANDOFF AND THE SURPRISE ALLIANCE

The photo had been taken minutes earlier. They were outside. Watching.

I rushed to lock the windows and doors and set every alarm. I called Detective Marlow and told him someone was at my gate. He said patrol was already rerouted — they would be there in minutes.

I stood by the curtain, peering out. A dark sedan idled across the street. No one got out. But I knew who waited inside.

Minutes later, blue lights flashed. The sedan sped away.

Marlow arrived and I showed him the photo and the letter. He read Elena’s note slowly. His expression hardened.

“This changes everything,” he said. “Combined with your testimony and the toxicology results, we have enough to bring both Elena and Vanessa in for formal questioning. Possibly charges. Threat to life. Conspiracy to commit harm. Accessory after the fact. Attempted theft by endangerment — we can build a strong case.”

“Arrest them?” I asked.

“Tomorrow morning,” he said. “But Adrian — keep this letter safe. Make copies. Give one to me tonight. Keep one with your lawyer. Keep one somewhere else entirely. Do not let them get their hands on it. If they think destroying this note protects them… they will try anything.”

That night, I could not sleep. I sat in the living room with all the evidence locked in a safe we had brought in from the study. Sophie slept upstairs, monitored by a baby monitor I kept right beside me.

Around two in the morning, my phone rang. Not an unknown number this time. It was Vanessa.

I answered, prepared to record everything.

“Adrian,” she said. Her voice was different. Not threatening. Tired. Desperate. “Do not trust Elena.”

I paused.

“What are you talking about?”

“She told me she would protect me,” Vanessa said, her voice shaking. “She told me once we had the documents, we would split everything. She would handle the legal side. I would take care of… the rest. But yesterday, I found papers. She set me up. If anything goes wrong, I take all the blame. She walks away clean. And she plans to have me silenced before I can testify.”

“Elena is your only danger now,” I said. “She wrote the threatening letter to Claire. She sent you here. She helped poison her own sister.”

Vanessa was quiet for a long moment.

“I did not know about the poisoning,” she said, very low. “Elena told me Claire was mentally unstable. That she needed someone to look after things. That Claire was leaving everything to strangers. I believed her. I helped her. But I never knew… she used me. From the very beginning.”

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

“Because she will kill me to keep me quiet,” Vanessa said. “And then she will come for you. And then for Sophie. Adrian… Elena does not just want the inheritance. She wants Claire dead. She has wanted her dead for years. And now she wants Sophie dead too. Because if Sophie dies, then Elena inherits by law.”

My breath caught.

Everything Elena had done snapped into place — the threats, the attempts to get close, the patience, the careful plotting. It was never just about money. It was about eliminating every obstacle standing between Elena and Claire’s entire estate.

“She is planning something,” Vanessa said. “Tomorrow. Before the police come. She told me she will come to your house early. She will say she wants to talk. She will be calm. Reasonable. And she will bring something — tea, pastries, anything. Do not eat or drink anything she offers. She means to end this tomorrow.”

“Why are you warning me?” I asked again.

“Because I helped her,” Vanessa said. “And I cannot live with what I almost did to that child. Elena left me with nothing. She planned to frame me for everything. I have proof. Emails. Instructions. Payments. Everything she sent me.” Vanessa took a breath. “I will turn it all over to you. To the police. But I need protection. From her. Before she gets to me first.”
