Chapter 12 - THE LETTER AND THE CHOICE

A week later, a plain white envelope arrived in the mail. No return address. Handwriting I recognized instantly.

Elena’s.

My heart hammered as I carried it into the study and closed the door. I stood holding it for a long time, afraid of what I would read. Afresh threat? Another lie? Or something honest at last?

I opened it carefully.

The letter was long, written in neat, unsteady handwriting.

Adrian,

By the time you read this, everything will be over. I will be where I belong. I am writing this because there are things I need to say — things I never had the courage to speak aloud.

I hated Claire. That is the truth. I hated her goodness. Her beauty. The way everyone loved her instantly while I stood in her shadow, invisible. I told myself she stole everything from me. But the truth is far uglier. I hated her because she was everything I could never be.

And because I could not be her, I decided to destroy her.

Vanessa was my tool. Nothing more. I found her, used her, planned to discard her when the time came. I never cared about her. Only what she could get for me.

I watched Claire fade away. I sat beside her bed and held her hand while the poison slowly stole her life. She looked at me once — her own sister — and smiled. She said she forgave me. Even then, she knew. And she forgave me anyway. That moment has haunted me every single day since.

I want you to know something. There was never anyone else. No other conspirators. No hidden partners. I acted alone. I manipulated Vanessa. I planned everything myself. I do not want you looking over your shoulder for years to come. I do not want Sophie growing up afraid that another monster waits in the shadows.

It was only me. And I am finished.

Tell Sophie I am sorry. Tell her I loved her, in my own twisted way. Tell her to be brave. To be like her mother.

And tell Claire… I hope she finally found peace.

Elena

I folded the letter slowly and placed it in the desk drawer beside Claire’s things. The final piece. The last secret laid bare.

There was no one else. The danger was truly gone.

That night, I sat at the kitchen table with a glass of water, thinking. Elena’s confession removed the last weight from my shoulders. But it also left a strange, hollow quiet behind.

I had a choice to make. I could remain behind locked doors, afraid of every stranger, teaching Sophie that the world was full of enemies. Or I could heal. I could open the windows. I could teach her that evil existed — but so did goodness. That trust was not foolishness. That love was stronger than fear.

I stood up and walked to the front door. I unlocked it. Then I walked around the house and turned off every alarm.

When I returned to the living room, Sophie stood in the doorway, clutching her bear. She looked at the open door, then at me.

“Are we safe, Daddy?” she asked again.

May you like

I knelt and took her hands in mine.

“Yes,” I said. “We are safe. And from now on… we start living again.”
