Chapter 11 - THE AFTERMATH OF TRUTH

The weeks turned into months.
Evelyn was charged with multiple counts of murder, conspiracy, fraud, and kidnapping. She was deemed too weak to stand trial immediately—but the evidence was overwhelming. She would never be free again.
Daniel pleaded guilty to lesser charges—conspiracy, covering up crimes, withholding evidence. He cooperated fully. He testified against his mother. He told the court everything.
The judge took his complicity into account—but also his last-minute confession and the lives he had saved. He was sentenced to six years in prison. With good behavior, he could be out in four.
I visited him once.
He sat across from me in the visiting room, wearing prison gray, his head bowed.
“Thank you,” he said. “For coming.”
“I came because I needed to know,” I said. “What you want from me.”
Daniel looked up. His eyes were tired.
“Nothing,” he said. “I don’t expect forgiveness. I don’t expect anything. I just… I wanted you to know. I never meant to hurt Noah. I never meant to hurt you. I was just… so afraid of her. All my life.”
“I know,” I said. “And that was your failure, Daniel. You let fear make your choices.”
He nodded slowly. “I know. And I will pay for it. But when I get out… if I ever get out… may I see him? May I tell him I am sorry?”
I hesitated.
“You were kind to him sometimes,” I said. “Before everything changed. You were a good man, once. But you let Evelyn turn you into something else.”
I stood up.
“I will think about it. When he is older. When he understands. If he wants to meet you… I will bring him.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you. That is more than I deserve.”
“It is more than you deserve,” I agreed. “But Noah deserves to know the whole story. Even the sad parts.”
I walked out.

Sarah was waiting for me in the car. She didn’t ask. She just handed me a tissue and drove in silence.
That was the last time I ever saw Daniel.
