Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH COMES OUT

Three weeks later, the DNA test results were released.

Noah was not Daniel Carter’s son.

He was Damian Vance’s son—confirmed beyond any doubt. The bloodline my father had written about. The secret Evelyn had killed to hide.

The story broke everywhere. Headlines screamed from every news outlet.

CARTER FAMILY SECRETS UNCOVERED. HEIR NOT A CARTER AT ALL. MURDER AND DECEPTION BEHIND BILLIONAIRE FACADE.

Evelyn’s entire world collapsed. The name she had murdered to protect was not her name. It was stolen. It was fake.

I did not give interviews. I did not seek attention. I simply released the documents—my father’s will, the letters, the evidence Elias had gathered before he died.

And then I waited.

The public reaction was swift. The Carters were disgraced. Businesses dropped the family name. Charities returned donations. The legacy Evelyn had spent a lifetime building crumbled in a single week.

She woke from her coma three days after the results were released.

She asked for me.

I went to the hospital.

She lay in the bed, pale and weak, tubes running from her arms. She looked smaller than I had ever seen her. Old. Broken.

When she saw me, she did not scream. She did not threaten.

She just looked tired.

“You won,” she said. Her voice was thin and raspy.

“I didn’t want to win this way,” I told her. “I just wanted my son to be safe. And to be known by his real father’s name.”

“Damian,” she whispered. “He was a good man. Better than Daniel. Better than… any of us.”

“Why did you do it?” I asked. “Why kill him? Why kill everyone?”

Evelyn stared at the ceiling.

“Because I was afraid,” she said quietly. “Afraid that if anyone knew… Noah would be taken from me. That Elias would take him. That Damian’s family would take him. That everything I had built… would belong to strangers.”

She turned her head and looked at me.

“I wanted a Carter heir. I wanted the name to continue. But I chose the wrong father. Because Damian’s blood was too strong. His face… his eyes… that scar… it was impossible to hide. I realized too late. That boy would never look like a Carter. He would always look like a Vance.”

She closed her eyes.

“So I killed them all. To bury the resemblance. To bury the truth. And then your father… he had to die too. Because he saw it. He knew.”

There was no remorse in her voice. Only regret that she had failed.

“You will spend the rest of your life in prison,” I said. “Or in a hospital. Alone.”

Evelyn smiled. A thin, bitter smile.

“Not entirely alone. I will have the truth for company. That I lost everything… because I was afraid of a scar above a child’s eyebrow.”

I turned and walked out.

I never saw her again.
