Chapter 8

The recorder was inside my grandmother’s cedar box.

I had not opened it since her funeral.

Detective Cole came before I touched anything.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

A necklace.

And the small silver recorder.

The battery was dead.

Forensics powered it carefully.

There were twenty-three audio files.

Most were ordinary.

My grandmother reminding herself about appointments.

Notes about recipes.

A message for Sophie’s birthday.

Then the final recording began.

My grandmother’s voice sounded weak.

Emily, if you find this, Robert knows I discovered everything.

I grabbed Lauren’s hand.

The recording continued.

He stole from me for years. When I recovered the money, he threatened to destroy this family.

Detective Cole leaned closer.

Then Margaret said:

Robert has a son he refuses to acknowledge.

Ryan.

Ryan closed his eyes when Cole later played it for him.

My grandmother had known.

How?

The recording answered.

Diane told me years ago because she feared Robert would someday use the truth against them.

I stared at Ryan.

His mother had known Robert was his father.

She had told my grandmother.

And never told Ryan.

Margaret continued.

I created Sophie’s trust because Robert will come for anything connected to me. Do not let him convince Ryan that you are the enemy.

My eyes filled with tears.

She had predicted everything.

Then came the sentence that changed my understanding again.

If Ryan ever turns against you over the trust, ask Diane about the agreement she signed with Robert before Ryan was born.

Ryan looked toward Detective Cole.

“What agreement?”

Diane was brought in voluntarily that afternoon.

She looked terrified.

Ryan did not hug her.

“What did you sign?”

She started crying.

“Robert gave me money.”

“For what?”

“I was twenty-two.”

“For what, Mom?”

“To stay away from him.”

Ryan stared.

“You sold him silence?”

“No.”

“He paid you?”

“He was married. I was pregnant. He wanted nothing to do with us.”

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“That was my price?”

Diane covered her face.

Then Cole asked the important question.

“What else was in the agreement?”

Diane hesitated.

“If Robert ever established a trust for Ryan, I would have no claim to it.”

Ryan frowned.

“He created a trust?”

“I thought he never did.”

But Robert had.

Police had found it in his financial records.

A trust established thirty-seven years earlier.

Current value:

$4.2 million.

Ryan stared at the number.

“I don’t want his money.”

Cole said, “That may explain his motive.”

Robert had secretly used trust funds as collateral for investments.

If Ryan ever learned the trust existed and claimed it, Robert’s financial crimes would become obvious.

So Robert needed Ryan distracted.

Angry.

Suspicious.

Fighting me over Sophie’s trust.

Jessica had helped create that chaos.

The affair became both manipulation and genuine betrayal.

Ryan looked destroyed.

“He used me.”

I said quietly, “And you let him because you chose to believe the worst about me.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

That evening, Sophie surprised me.

“Can Daddy come tomorrow?”

I hesitated.

“Why?”

“I want to tell him something.”

“What?”

She shook her head.

“It’s for Daddy.”

The next afternoon, Ryan came under supervision.

He knelt in front of her.

Sophie held the paper snowflake she had dropped during the original fight.

“I fixed it.”

Ryan started crying.

She handed it to him.

Then said:

“I love you, Daddy.”

He covered his mouth.

“But I don’t trust you yet.”

Ryan’s face collapsed.

Sophie continued.

“Mommy says trust has to grow back.”

Ryan nodded through tears.

“She’s right.”

Then Sophie said something neither of us expected.

“Jessica told me you would leave us.”

Ryan looked up sharply.

“When?”

“Last week.”

I stared at Sophie.

“What exactly did she say?”

May you like

Sophie whispered:

“She said after Daddy got Mommy’s money, we wouldn’t need this family anymore.”
